Koo Jun Yup has made his first public appearance since the passing of his wife, Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (Xu Xiyuan), drawing concern from fans and family due to his visibly thinner frame.
Photos shared by Hsu’s mother on May 12 show Koo attending a family gathering dressed in a black t-shirt, cap, and sunglasses. His noticeably sharp jawline and frail appearance have sparked renewed attention to his condition.
In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Hsu’s mother wrote, “This Mother’s Day is a sad one. My son-in-law Koo Jun Yup misses my daughter dearly and is growing thinner by the day.”
She also expressed gratitude toward her other son-in-law, Mike, saying, “He always takes care of me with great attention. I’m grateful to have such filial children.”
Hsu’s mother went on to share a touching anecdote: “My daughter Dee Hsu [Xu Xidi] asked a colleague to create an AI video of her late sister when I said I wanted to hear her say happy birthday. It meant a lot.”
She concluded with a message of thanks to the public: “I’m truly grateful to the many colleagues and fans who continue to remember my daughter and send me warm support. I’ll try to stay strong. Things will get better with time.”
Earlier in March, Taiwanese media reported that Koo had lost over 12 kilograms after his wife’s funeral and had been avoiding public appearances since.
It has also been reported that Koo is currently dedicating himself to creating a memorial statue in honor of Barbie Hsu. The statue will be placed at Jinbaoshan in Taiwan, where her ashes were laid to rest.
Barbie Hsu was a beloved star in Taiwan, known across Asia for her lead role in the 2001 drama Meteor Garden. She debuted in 1994 as a singer with her younger sister Dee Hsu.
Hsu and Koo Jun Yup married in February 2022, rekindling a romance that originally began in 1998 during Koo’s promotional activities in Taiwan with the group Clon.
Barbie Hsu passed away on February 2 this year during a trip to Japan with Koo, after falling ill with pneumonia complicated by influenza.
