Director Hwang Dong Hyuk has shared his thoughts on the casting controversy surrounding TOP (Choi Seung Hyun), formerly of BIGBANG, and actor Oh Dal Soo in 'Squid Game 2'.

During an interview on the 2nd, Hwang stated, "Legally, there were no issues, and I am not in a position to judge the severity of the incidents." He noted that Oh Dal Soo's case had concluded without charges being filed. He added, "Since he was already appearing in other works, I questioned whether casting him warranted such criticism."

Hwang also explained his decision to cast both TOP and Oh Dal Soo, saying, "I believed their combination would create synergy." He further elaborated, "Oh Dal Soo is an actor I’ve long wanted to work with, and I felt this role suited him well. My decision was based on the character's compatibility, not to assist in his comeback."

Regarding the controversy, Hwang commented, "This isn’t an issue with clear standards. Some may raise concerns, while others may let it go. I’ve watched the reactions with mixed feelings, but ultimately, it’s up to the audience to decide."

Actor Oh Dal Soo faced allegations of sexual harassment and assault during his time with the Yeonhee Street Theater Troupe in 2018 as part of the #MeToo movement. In response, he admitted to his wrongdoing, issued a public apology, and withdrew from the tvN drama 'My Mister'. The case was closed without formal investigation due to the statute of limitations.

Another controversial figure in the 'Squid Game Season 2' casting is TOP. TOP was convicted in 2017 for smoking marijuana at his home in 2016 while serving as a conscripted policeman. He received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

The casting of Oh Dal Soo and T.O.P has sparked boycott calls against 'Squid Game 2.'

Meanwhile, 'Squid Game 2' follows the story of Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae), who returns to the game seeking revenge, and his intense showdown with the Front Man (Lee Byung Hun), as the true game begins anew. Since its release on December 26, the series has topped Netflix’s viewership rankings in all 93 countries tracked by FlixPatrol from December 28 to January 1, marking a historic first for a Netflix original series.
