[OP-ED] The Growing Demand for Co-Ed K-Pop Groups

AKP STAFF

[OP-ED: This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of allkpop.]

Since the emergence of K-Pop, it has become apparent that two types of groups typically debut: male or female. However, in some cases, fans have been presented with a unique group dynamic. A co-ed group that consists of both male and female members!

Among the countless number of K-Pop groups that made their debut, the notable co-ed groups that you may have come across are KARD, MFBTY, Co-ed School, Urban Zakapa, Clazziquai, and Triple H. Occasionally, male and female idols have come together to collaborate. However, it is not often that we witness the dynamics of a group composed of both genders. This leads to the question: why is this the case?

Having a mix of male and female members in an idol group brings a new flare to the song and choreography, and it's great to see these groups not stick with the expected norm of a solely male or female idol group.

Granted, South Korea's culture of male and female dynamics is a bit more strict, and on top of that, South Korea tends to be more conservative when it comes to interactions between males and females. But it'd be great to see more groups have a mix of genders, don't you think?

Perhaps it's because the potential for scandal between members of a co-ed group is greater than that of a single-gender group. Nevertheless, one must give credit to the companies that are willing to take the risk of introducing a co-ed group, as it is something novel and still unfamiliar in the K-Pop industry.

I hope that in the future, more companies will attempt to launch a co-ed group; this could have a significant impact on the Korean music scene!

I don't see a growing demand, not even in international Kpop Fans which are a maybe bit more open at this idea, but for korea I don't see much coed groups in the future, even Kard where originally just a project group. And as I know the members don't live together (the boys live together and the girls live with their parents) and they always have to say that their relationship is strictly business and they see each other as siblings so that no one gets a wrong idea... Some fans don't even can stand when girl and boy groups are on the same stage and god forbid someone look a second to long to and person of the opposite gender... The only way is maybe a sibling group like Akmu

An op-ed that runs fewer than 300 words... Man even by AKP tabloid standards that's a little disappointing.
