Author David Yi talks about why he praises RM's beauty in his upcoming book

David Yi, a writer, is releasing a book about male beauty and care on June 22nd, 2021. In this book, he talks about the history of male beauty care (which includes skincare and makeup), tutorials and advice for beauty care, as well as male beauty icons "who have redefined what masculinity and gender expression look like throughout history, to empower us to live and look our truths."
One of these icons is BTS's RM himself, who is also featured on the cover!
David Yi elaborates further on this through a Twitter thread.
It spans from 50,000 BCE with our Neanderthal cousins who used foundations and blushes, ground up colorful rocks like pyrite for highlighters, and did so in a manner that made them feel beautifully powerful.

He first goes over some of the historical information in the book about older forms of makeup from Vikings, Neanderthals, etc.
In fact, he was called “ugly” when he debuted and people still harped on his aesthetics saying he had too much, uh, confidence. Commenters even said they wanted to “throw up” by looking at him?!
This leads to how "We celebrate all people from all backgrounds and how they redefined beauty for themselves." Yi then laments how RM hasn't been seen as the "standard of beauty" in Korea/K-pop, how some non-fans view him as ugly.
Double eyelids, a V-shaped chin, fair skin, a big, thin nose bridge…the list goes on. But RM is powerfully BEAUTIFUL in his own way! And he needs to be celebrated.

Yi then talks about how he was touched by RM promoting self-love. Loving yourself even when faced with disdain from many people. How RM promotes being ourselves through being "more kind to ourselves and others, first by speaking our truths and believing in them"!
I was genuinely confused when I actually found out that people don’t see him as handsome. He’s easily the most attractive man out here. Been Namjoon biased for 6 years now and we’re still going strong 😂🥰💜

I’m a not a fan or anything but I totally agree I love BTS personalities and I found RM handsome ! But then Korea is well known for their bias about beauty standards it’s probably why half of the population believes that plastic surgery is the only option... I like the fact that he promotes self love because we’re the way we are why should we change just because someone believes that we are not up to their standard... that’s so dumb !
