5 Ways Brave Girls Defied All Odds and Made Kpop History

Since winning #1 on Inkigayo and even achieving a Perfect All-Kill, many fans have been talking about how unlikely it was for Brave Girls to have this sudden surge in popularity and how it is something historical. Here are 5 Ways Brave Girls Defied All Odds and Made Kpop History,

1. Winning with a 4-Year-Old Song

There have been sleeper hits in the past, but not for a song that is 4 years old like Rollin'.  Brave Girls proved that even older songs that initially did not have much of a response could later go on to top the charts.  Unlike the other chart reversals in the past, many other songs from Brave Girls' discography have started to re-enter the charts again like We Ride, Rollin' (New Version), High Heels, and Memory.

2. Age of the Group

The current lineup recently celebrated their fifth anniversary since debuting with Brave Girls, but the group has existed for nearly 10 years.  After all that time, Brave Girls got their first win ever on Inkigayo, the longest it has ever taken a group to win on a music show.  Many fans believe that once a group is older, their chances of winning become slimmer if they haven't won yet.  Brave Girls proved that it isn't impossible for an old group to achieve this feat.

3. Age of the Members

Companies have been pushing to debut Kpop stars younger and younger as the years have gone on, sometimes as young as 14 years old!  The maknae of Brave Girls is 28 years old, and their leader is 31.  In the past, stars like Kahi of After School, Park Bom of 2NE1, and Sojin of Girl's Day had first achieved success at an older age, but this hasn't happened for a long time until this week.

4. Bringing Sexy Back

There has been a shift away from the sexy concept over the past few years.  Many companies have been promoting groups with a girl crush concept instead. Many believed the sexy concept wasn't profitable anymore, but Brave Girls proved that there is still demand for a concept like this.

5. Ending the Brave Brothers Curse

Brave Brothers used to write hits songs that launched many groups to stardom like Sistar, AOA, and Teen Top.  Yet, none of the groups under his own label have been able to gain much traction. Finally, Brave Entertainment's first artist ever has gotten a music show win.

What can entertainment labels learn from Brave Girls?

You never know when your group is going to blow up.  It might be one week after their debut or one week before their disbandment.  Therefore when you debut a group and have them sign a 7-year contract, it is your obligation to support them throughout those 7 years.  They are working hard for you, so you must work hard for them.  We as fans also need to realize that just because a group is older, doesn't mean we should stop supporting them or that it is too late to join the fandom.  Older groups deserve just as much attention if they're still promoting.  Finally, the video that went viral was what launched the group into stardom, but other factors caused Kpop fans worldwide to fall in love with Rollin'.  It was a good song that people genuinely enjoyed, a clever choreography that stood out, and the members themselves are extremely likable and charismatic on stage.  If a group is supported well by the fans and the label, achieving stardom is certainly possible.

I doubt many understand how successful they were when they debuted. I just looked at the sales numbers of their singles, and they sold a lot in the beginning! Their three first singles - which very few people remember anymore - were Do You Know (2011), Easily (2011) and Nowadays You (2012). They sold 428,789, 698,375 and 660,397 copies, respectively. After that the sales numbers just dropped like a stone. An amazing track like Deepened from 2016 only sold 10,942 copies. The long break they had between 2013 and 2016 really killed their nascent popularity, and should serve as a lesson for those who run these entertainment companies: strike while the iron is hot, do not put your groups in the dungeon for long periods of time.

Great article! I agree that this "rise to fame" was unexpected but yet , well deserved. I hope that this isn't just gonna be for a short period ,and people are still gonna support the group after this . I get a lot of brave girls videos recommendations in youtube and even if the channel isn't popular or it's just a short video of them it always has a lot of views ( like REALLY a lot in a short time ). I saw one comment saying that they were going to be the new "EXID" and I HOPE it's true. I wish them all the best ❤️
