I really don't get the hype of TVXQ. Not in a bad way. I am just really curious. I know they are very popular in Japan and currently promoting massively in Japan. But can someone give a little brief about them and why they are more popular in Japan than Korea?

TVXQ was made of 5 members and was the most popular group in 2004~2009. Especially Junsu and Yoochun were icons in Korea. K-Pop wasn't a thing in Japan, China and in SEA back in 2006 but TVXQ became successful to enter Japanese market and they became hugely popular, especially the member Jaejoong. They were (and still) considered as a Jpop group and compared with Japan's biggest groups etc. They also became a mainstream group in China, did stadium tours.. Oricon news even said that they were the biggest boygroup in Asia. However in 2009, Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu (JYJ) filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment over unfair contracts. They didn't want to leave TVXQ, just wanted a fair contract but SM did a lot of shit things to them to make them stay in TVXQ but it didn't work, boys finally left the company and TVXQ.

TVXQ's most popular members in Korea were the ones who left TVXQ (JYJ). After they left, Koreans supported JYJ and hated on 2 members. Then TVXQ came back after 2 years of hiatus. They didn't do well in Korea at all, actually wasn't bad either, but they literally lost their popularity but even though the most popular member in Japan was Jaejoong, Japanese fans embraced TVXQ too. They are very loyal and they didn't give up on them. About 2 years ago, Yoochun's scandal revealed and now Koreans hate JYJ and love TVXQ. They say they made mistake with supporting JYJ etc..

BTW SM Entertainment had banned JYJ in Korea and Japan. AVEX dropped JYJ in Japan and stopped them to appear on any tv shows or do promotions. Jaejoong wasn't active in Japan for 9 years, since 2009. He had zero appearance on Japanese TVs or magazines, could do 0 promotion. Now he's back to Japan after 9 years and his popularity is the same just like 9 years ago. He appeared on +40 tv shows and +13 music shows since February and recieved a lot of love. As you see, Japanese people are so loyal

This is all I can say. I support both of them :)

most of your comment is quite accurate .Except this..."About 2 years ago, Yoochun's scandal revealed and now Koreans hate JYJ and love TVXQ. They say they made mistake with supporting JYJ etc.."

Update: The scandal cases were proven false in court. There are legal court documents now . And In Korea, Yuchun's micfans are still very loyal to him.A very good proportion of his korean fans are ajumma fans . And his largest matured fan club is still very active. They are hot active on SNS like other fanclubs ..so most Ifans do not keep up to date of their ground works and missions.

I get korean jYJ news first hand and I don't think korean JYJ fans hated and abandoned JYJ. They are all in silent waiting mode for JYJ comeback .

Oh! Thank you for explaining! Yeah, Japanese fans are loyal. I understood that from the recent BTS incident as well.

Anyway, all the best to TVXQ.

In addition to what Duckface9 said, TVXQ debuted as an acapella-dance group - with stress on the acapella portion. They were a vocally-focused group in an era where K-pop was mostly about lipsync and beauty. Their skills ended up changing K-pop standards so much so, if you look up live performances in their era, most live performances are well..live. TVXQ used almost no backtrack and even sang all harmonies live while dancing heavy choreography. Their vocal skill and style helped them (in addition to their hard work and persistence) break into the Japanese market as musicians, rather than idols, which they were known as in Korea. Because they've earned the respect as musicians, Japanese fans have stood by the TVXQ (THSK) name. Japanese fans also acknowledge Yunho and Changmin's loyalty to the THSK name - that they stayed to carry the torch that could've been broken by the other three members leaving. They reward THSK's loyalty to fans with their own long-term faith. As already mentioned by Duckface9, Koreans reacted oppositely - they called the two remaining members traitors and were faithful to the three that left instead. Not mentioned however is the fact that the TVXQ situation closely mirrored the breakup of a 90's legendary boygroup HOT - HOT was also 5 members with 3 members leaving. Though the situation was different, it incited K-fans anger towards an already "evil" company and the two that decided to stay. Of course this changed as time passed and TVXQ's integrity showed, while the members that left errr..well they have been seen in questionable light.

All in all, they've standardized a certain level of quality in K-pop, while breaking into the J-market because of that quality. I'd suggest you youtube "love in the ice" or even "mirotic" live performances to see the quality difference. To this day, I can't say the industry has had a boy group that sounds better live together than individually, or in comparison to their digitally retouched recordings.

SM strongly promoted them in Japan because it is a huge music market, Japanese fans buy a lot of physical copies of the albums. Also TVXQ is popular for their impeccable live performances, if you watch them they almost don't use prerecorded background vocals, contrary to most Kpop artists.

I hate SM for promoting senior artists badly they are starting to do it to EXO as well but at least we have our favorite artists for a long time...If it was YG or JYP most of the groups would have disbanded. Sometimes I think SM has some kind of agreement with their artists that one day they will stop promoting them as much for a new group but to compensate them they will let them last for a long time. There must be some kind of agreement because If it was me I would be salty but SM groups surprisingly support each other and are not salty about it at all
