Last October, Seo Shin Ae made headlines and shocked many by wearing a revealing dress to the '2017 Busan International Film Festival' (BIFF). Netizens criticized the young star for trying to "grow up too fast". 

On the February 28 airing of MBC's 'Radio Star', Seo Shin Ae admitted that she took on heavy makeup and a mature style to overcome her child actress image. She said, "I was recommended I try a more mature style for my makeup, hair, and clothes, and I did do so for a while. But I felt like I was wearing clothes that didn't suit me."

However, Seo Shin Ae explained her viral dress had nothing to do with her attempt to look more mature. She said, "I didn't wear that dress to look mature. My stylist, mom, and managers all told me the dress is pretty. I also liked the dress, and as a 20-year-old, I thought it was definitely okay for me to wear it."

She surprised many as she revealed, "It was actually even more low cut but we pinned it up a little."
