Netizens have laid out a comparison between Girls' Generation's Tiffany and AOA's Seolhyun and Jimin for being involved in similar controversies.

Back in May, Seolhyun and Jimin received criticism for their lack of historical knowledge on 'Channel AOA' and, apologized to the public through their Instagrams.

Netizens, noting the similarity between the two AOA members's controversy and Tiffany's ongoing controversy, claim that Seolhyun and Jimin handled matters better than Tiffany, with more sincere apologies and sincere actions. First, they claimed that Tiffany's apology failed to address the issue specifically. She does not mention the rising sun flag, Korean Independence Day, or any of the sensitive factors that led to the controversy in the first place. Netizens believe Tiffany wrote such a vague apology in consideration of her Japanese fans.

On the other hand, they claimed that Seolhyun and Jimin addressed the issue with a detailed apology directly stating their wrongdoings. The two AOA members also supposedly took 3 months off from using SNS, and were reportedly captured reading history books during their flights. Furthermore, some reports have claimed that FNC Entertainment even provided the members consulting with a history professor named Choi Tae Sung.

Ultimately, the comparison is leading to even more criticism toward Tiffany. What do you think of the comparison between the current and past controversies?

  1. Seolhyun
  2. Jimin
  3. Tiffany

The controversy is so fresh that you can't really compare what Jimin and Seolhyun have done to make it up to fans/netizens in the MONTHS after their controversy to what Tiffany has had the opportunity to do in the week or so since news of her scandal broke. I understand criticizing her apology in general (I haven't read it myself), but there really isn't a basis to compare anything else.

it's not like she came to korea to learn history, justice and korean sensitivity. if they dont like her zero knowledge about it then just tell her and teach her, no hate needed.

Brimstone Nanette19 Friday, August 19, 2016

Just because she didn't come to Korea to learn history doesn't mean she shouldn't know it especially when she spends years there and make a living of her fame there. Stardom is the type of career that depends heavily on the people and she can't afford to rile them all up

What do you want Tiffany to do...? Okay, seolhyun and jimin could study more about the history, but what is Tiffany supposed to do? What is studying going to change, she probably already knows, she probably just forgot because she probably doesn't wake up in Japan on August 15th and go like "omg it's Korean independence day!" I understand how big of an issue this is to Korea, because of all the remaining scars but I just don't think this is right.. why is everyone getting so worked up. It's been done, I think they should stop tormenting her, I think she's received enough hate to fill up her life lived and I think she's read enough comments and articles to know how important this 'memory' is. And with that what are the Japanese supposed to feel..? I'm sure this isn't mending their relationship either, dragging this incident and critizing her non-stop. What good are people getting out of this..?

I agree. I believe that the situation should've been handled in the way that Tiffany should've been told what she did wrong and why in a respectful and calm manner, then, leave it at that. Not cyberbullying her. She never meant to hurt nor offend anyone, it was not her intentions. But, what she receives in return online and by the media is intentional hate, rudeness and ridicule. And I believe it needs to stop.

I like how hypocritical Knetizens are over this on Tiffany and meanwhile they were all bitching about how unfair it was for the treatment some folks in China gave to Tzuyu over the whole JYP flap.  To some in China, it was very offensive considering their history with contentious relationship with Taiwan - however, others - such as the Knetizens couldn't see what the big deal was.  Everyone needs to chill out.  The public was wrong to criticize Tzuyu (bitch all you want about how JYP handled it), and the public is again wrong on criticizing Tiffany who has always shown unwavering support for ROK only to seemingly have it undone by one act.  People need to get over themselves.

The 2 situations are different. China is pretty much the only country that doesn't recognize Taiwan as an independent country, also the Taiwanese flag isn't offensive in any right, China just has too much pride. The rising sun flag on the other hand is known to be controversial, it's a war flag that's directly offensive to Koreans and even Chinese. When tiffany posted that flag Koreans saw it as a big fuck you. That's why they are acting the way they are towards her.

kkrazy snsd_kpopgirl Thursday, August 18, 2016

You're missing the point. The point is that is both was offensive to parties involved. If you say that Tiffany's posting was a big "fuck you" - then you can say that JYP's posting of Tzuyu's birthplace being in Taiwan was a big "fuck you" to China. We're not talking flags - we're talking what is offensive and in each case, it was deemed to be offensive to a nation. Also, you're very mistaken in that "China is pretty must the only country that doesn't recognize Taiwan as an independent country." The United Nations does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country, nor does the US, UK, Japan, India, Pakistan, and quite a few other countries. Even South Korea does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country. They all recognize the People's Republic of China - not the Republic of China (Taiwan).

snsd_kpopgirl kkrazy Thursday, August 18, 2016

Either way of course Koreans wee saying those things about China because they didn't experience a situation like that. Now they have and either way tiffany is going to get criticized greatly because of what she did and her vague apology. There is nothing that we can do

I can't believe that Jimin and Seolhyun went thrugh all of that just because of not knowing something. How corrupt are netizens and people who control what idols can and cannot do?

sandra2ne1black Wednesday, August 17, 2016

Tiffanys is the stupidest idol! she lived 10 years in korea, studying 3 years in korea,, but she don't not remember and respect the Independence day of Korea. that tiffany is a b*tch ignorant, idiot and unfeeling. Tiffany needs study and remember the History.

Nutelladela sandra2ne1black Wednesday, August 17, 2016

Yes!!! Finally someone gets it

fanggirl123 sandra2ne1black Wednesday, August 17, 2016

yes, history can be repeated. Just like that time where this girl called another girl a "b*tch ignorant, idiot and unfeeling" only to realize she completely failed in understanding that two flags, with two completely different symbols have different, histories and meanings.

team_kris sandra2ne1black Wednesday, August 17, 2016

“but she don't not remember…the Independence day of Korea” – Not necessarily. You do not know this. The only thing that can be said for certain is that she doesn’t know the negative connotations the rising sun flag has for people in Korea—this is NOT synonymous with having ignorance of Korea’s independence day (that is, you can know of the day but not the flag). Given that many NATIVE Korean idols have also committed faux pas regarding misuse of the flag, I would think that critics would be a little more lenient in their criticism of Tiffany; at least she has the excuse of being primarily rasied and educated in a country where the rising sun flag does not have the same negative symbolism as it does throughout East and Southeast Asia. [For example, in the U.S., it is not uncommon to see people wearing clothing featuring the rising sun design.] // Tiffany made a mistake. This is not in question. What is questionable is the disproportionate amount of hate she is receiving within a country (Korea) whose own educational system could not prevent several native-born Korean idols from committing similar misinformed acts involving the rising sun flag. So, what does this say about the Korean educational system and its priorities?

Luna_Regina sandra2ne1black Wednesday, August 17, 2016

@Sandra2NE1black I am guessing from your username you are a 2NE1 fan. You really have no right to say these things about Tiffany. Yeah, she made a mistake but at least she didn't break the law like one of the members of 2NE1 did. I mean, I mean, I hate to bring that up as I think it was a bit silly as well how people reacted to it BUT it is much worse than using a flag emoji that people find offensive and makes you a bit hypocritical.

velvetskies sandra2ne1black Friday, August 19, 2016

Damn your brainwashed mind. Wow. You have no sense in current day. Please, you need history lessons way more than Seolhyun and Jimin. Your assuming that "Oh Japan is like another Nazi" just because they were a team back during the World Wars? Goodness sakes. The fact that you're generalizing a country and their citizens just because of their history is ridiculous and immature. You're trying to backlash Tiffany by bringing up history that you're probably not even familiar with? Nice try, smart ass, but you're still behind. Hit the books :)

Queen_Jennie  LovelyBabyz (Banned) Wednesday, August 17, 2016

Maybe, but at least she can use photoshop to edit her pictures. Sadly cannot say the same thing about your personality. For that, any help comes late.

Skylar_Grey Wednesday, August 17, 2016
