Super Junior’s Shindong badmouths fat girls
Popular boy band Super Junior just can’t seem to avoid undergoing controversy as another one of their members, Shindong, has faced criticism for a comment he made during the broadcasting of MBC radio station Shim Shim Tapa.
On the 29th, a female listener revealed to the radio station that she recently fought with her boyfriend because of her decision to go on a diet. When she shared with him her diet plans for the new year, he told her, “Don’t start if you’re only going to quit after a few days. Your body isn’t the type to change with a diet.”
Kim Shin Young, who co-hosts the radio station, stated, “To a girl, a negative comment about her weight is equivalent to asking for a punch.”
The Super Junior chubster then commented, “If someone had to lose weight, I would tell that person to lose weight. Lose some weight, why can’t you take care of yourself. When I say this, the person might think, ‘Look who’s talking,’ but I would reply, ‘I’m a boy and you’re a girl.‘”
To this, both Kim Shin Young and announcer Gu Eun Young retorted, “Why does gender matter in this situation? So girls have to be skinny and boys can be…” Taken aback by their remarks, Shindong quickly explained, “I’m just saying. Honestly, I would want the person that I love to be more pretty or more handsome.”
This issue brings up a previous episode of MBC ’Quiz to Change the World,’ wherein fellow Super Junior members also expressed their distaste in “larger” women. Yesung stated, “I think obese people are lazy” while Leeteuk confessed, “I really dislike fat girls. I don’t think they take care of their bodies well.”

In response to Shindong’s remark towards overweight females, netizens commented, “I don’t understand the reasoning behind how men are allowed to be fat but women are not,” and “How can he say something like that when his own chubbiness is being well-received?”
His statement, which has been deemed as offensive by the majority, transcends a simple issue with obesity to that of sexism. Do you side with the Super Junior member or was Shindong completely in the wrong this time?

I want to get inside Shindong’s mind because I really don’t understand his logical :/ I think it’s very hypocritical (and yes sexist). You would think that he would be polite because someone was reaching out to him for advice. I mean she must have really wanted his input to bring up a subject such as her and her boyfriend getting in a fight on a radio show. It takes courage and guts and for what?! To get shot down and criticized just for being a girl?!
I think that Yesung and Leeteuk are being WAY to stereotypical. I can believe that from what we have read or learned or heard that many people say obesity and being overweight comes from not eating healthy, eating too much, and not exercising enough (because I know that this is what I hear a lot, but that’s not entirely true). Like many previous posts states, everyone has a story. Some of us have bigger bones, wider hips, buttylicious, ect. That doesn’t make you fat! Maybe our metabolisms are slower or you have diabetes, or no matter how much you work out or how healthy you eat you just can’t seem to lose weight. It’s not as if everyone was born with a neutral weight gene where the only things that effect your weight is food and exercise. I think that many people forget about a thing called genetics :/ I think they were too general and I hope that when they see a “fat” girl they aren’t quick to judge.
Also, It’s not fair to say “fat” people are lazy! Not all “fat people are lazy and reversely not all lazy people are fat. I’m very light weight and my daily “exercise” is walking from the couch to the kitchen to get a hotpocket…and then walking back to the couch xD I’m probably one of the laziest people I know! I can understand if it’s the laziness that doesn’t have it’s charm but laziness comes from anyone!
I understand the dislike of “not taking care of their bodies.” It’s natural to wish for good health for those you care about. However, not taking care and taking care of your body comes in different forms. I read a post earlier talking about how someone had a diabetic friend/teacher and they need to eat sugary food (like chocolate). That’s taking care of your body! However, if they don’t like people that don’t take care of their bodies I don’t think they can say their ideal type is someone skinny mini! Being underweight is NOT taking care of your body either! Even if it’s more “ideal” it’s not taking care of yourself. Period.
Also, I hope that those statements aren’t indirectly calling bigger people ugly! I think it’s horrible how media always makes it that way >o Anyone who thinks that way just needs to take a good look at Queen Latifah ;DI
love you Suju but we need to remember to think before we speak. This is a very sensitive subject for girls (aka: pretty much their whole entire fan base) and words can hurt more than any physical injury and can influence more than any action.
This is a LOT longer than I expected ;.; Sorry. It’s just my thoughts ^^;
