A male BJ (Broadcast Jockey/ streamer), who livestreamed a sexual assault on an unconscious woman, was sentenced to 8 years in prison in the first trial.
On May 21, the Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Agreement Division 29 (Presiding Judge Eom Ki Pyo) sentenced a man in his 30s, surnamed Kim, to 8 years in prison for charges including quasi-forcible molestation.
He was also ordered to undergo three years of probation after serving his sentence and was banned from working in institutions related to children, teenagers, or people with disabilities for ten years.
Kim was put on trial for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman during a livestream that had around 200 viewers at the time.
Although 200 people were watching the live stream, it was reported that not one of the viewers informed the police until the woman realized she had been assaulted and filed a report.
The court rejected Kim’s claim that the victim had consented, stating, “It cannot be believed that the victim, in her unconscious state, was aware of or consented to a livestreamed sexual act.”
The court further noted, “It is reasonable to conclude that the defendant livestreamed the act to attract more viewers with provocative content and to generate profit,” acknowledging that the crime was committed for commercial gain.
