Teenager beats his girlfriend for a stupefying reason

A teenager who hit his girlfriend for falling asleep during a movie has been sentenced to prison time. 

According to the Seoul Central court document, the 19-year-old Choi was watching a movie with his girlfriend, also 19 years old, at home around 3AM. When the girlfriend started to fall asleep, he beat her several times with a broomstick.

Before this incident, in October, when his cell phone broke during an argument because Choi threw it in anger, he blamed it on his girlfriend and threatened her, making her pay for his new phone.

Choi frequently broke mirrors and hit his own head against the wall, threatening his girlfriend and coerced her into giving him cash. She ended up paying him 1,500,000 KRW (~$1282 USD) and giving him clothes and shoes worth 430,000 KRW (~$367 USD). This isn't the first time an incident like this has occurred as when they were watching a movie together at a theater, Choi hit the girlfriend's face because 'she fell asleep during the movie.'

The court sentenced Choi to 1 year in prison, citing, "The nature of the crime is bad, as he continuously assaulted the victim, and the victim wants him to be punished."
