As of July 3 KST, South Korea's Supreme Court has finalized a sentence of probation for 2-years, plus a fine of 2 million KRW (~ 1,500 USD), for actor Yoo Ah In over his violation of the Narcotics Control Act. The Supreme Court chose to uphold the decision made by the district court during the appeal trial, confirming Yoo Ah In's sentence.
Previously, Yoo Ah In was indicted for abusing 4 types of illegal drugs including propofol, midazolam, ketamine, and remimazolam between September of 2020 through March of 2020, as well as for being prescribed sleeping pills under another individual's name over 40 times between May of 2021 through August of 2022.
Initially, the district court found Yoo Ah In guilty of all his charges and sentenced him to 1-year in prison plus a fine of 2 million KRW, 80 hours of rehabilitation, and an additional court fee of 1.54 million KRW. The case was then appealed and brought to the district court once again, after which Yoo Ah In's sentence was reduced to 2-years of probation plus a fine of 2 million KRW.
Notably, despite his ongoing trial, South Korea's film industry chose to embrace Yoo Ah In, rather than banishing him. The actor appeared in 2 blockbuster productions this year, including 'The Match' with Lee Byung Hun and 'Hi-Five' with Oh Jung Se, Ra Mi Ran, and more.
Industry insiders were nonetheless divided on when film producers will begin casting Yoo Ah In again in their productions. One insider commented, "With his sentence finalized, it'll be a matter of who casts him first." However, another insider remarked, "While it's true that he was highly sought-after by casting directors, it will still be difficult to fully overcome the 'disgraceful' image which has become ingrained in the minds of the masses."
