Your traditional Korean wedding (featuring your K-Pop groom)

Buzz

You've seen the beautiful traditional Korean wedding and its many customs in some of your favorite Korean dramas like 'The Moon That Embraces The Sun' and 'Goong (Princess Hours).' However, have you ever wondered what it would actually be like to get married in a traditional Korean wedding? No worries -I can guide you through your special day. (If you're having a little difficulty imagining it, just imagine you celebrating with you favorite K-pop idol!)

Before the wedding

Your future K-pop husband has already created a box, called hahm, filled with gifts for your family. With the help of his friends and group members, he arrives at your house with the box while chanting, "Hahm for sale! Hahm for sale!" With much joking and laughter, your family negotiates a monetary offer with the rowdy group to "buy" the box, creating a fun atmosphere for all in preparation for the joyous occasion.

Your K-pop groom-to-be has also given your mother a pair of wooden geese, called kirogi. Geese mate for life, symbolizing the long years of happiness that you two will share as a married couple (and maybe also the long years of waiting for him as a diligent fangirl).

The day of the wedding

Time to get you dressed and beautified! Since Korean weddings traditionally take place in the bride's home, you're getting ready in the comfort of your own house. You pull on the traditional wedding hanbok, complete with the jeogori (the long-sleeved jacket part of the hanbok) and the chima (the skirt of the hanbok). To make sure you're a lucky bride who experiences no ill events or evil spirits on your special day, red dots are placed on your forehead and cheeks. Aren't you a beautiful bride!

Your husband-to-be will be wearing his own hanbok for men. Just as how white wedding dresses for women are worn in Western weddings, a blue hanbokis the traditional wear for men at their weddings. And, of course, he'll look handsome and perfect as always (like Taemin... unless he's actually your husband-to-be!).

Climb into your very own gama, or sedan chair, where you'll definitely feel like a princess - that is, if you weren't already feeling like one before. You'll be carried in the gama by four strong guys, probably your husband's fellow group members. Don't worry about how your husband-to-be will get there since he'll be arriving in a gama of his own!

When you arrive, you see that the setting has already been set. A wedding screen has already been raised, creating the perfect backdrop for you two. Painted with peonies, cranes, and other beautiful imagery, this screen symbolizes the long healthy and happy future you two will share together as a married couple (No other fangirl is going to steal him from you now! Of course, I just jest.)

It's finally time when you and the K-pop idol you used to gaze at longingly from your laptop screen become a loving and happily married couple! After you two initiate the kunberewedding ceremony bybowing deeply to each other, your mother pours some homemade wine into two special cups, which were carved out from a gourd she grew herself. Smile and take a sip, because you two are now husband and wife!

Ready to share your wedding "kiss" with your new K-pop husband? While there are no actual kisses shared between the groom and his bride at a traditional Korean wedding, there's a moment where you'll pass either a date or jujube between you two... using only your mouths! (Like a sweet candy kiss, but less contact.)

Don't forget to feed your guests! Noodles, such as janchi guksu,at a Korean wedding are absolutely mandatory to help affirm long and happy lives for you and your new husband. Of course you can't forget other delicacies like bulgogi (marinated rib eye beef), galbi (beef ribs), and dduk (rice cakes)!

After the wedding

Of course you need to give gifts to his parents! In a special ceremony called paebaek, you'll gift your new in-laws dried dates, chestnuts, or jujubes, which symbolize fertility and the many beautiful children you'll have with your new K-pop husband. Your new in-laws will then toss the dates, chestnuts, or jujubes at you, which you then have to catch in your skirt with the help of your new husband.

Now it's time for your new lives as husband and wife to begin! Don't forget to take many photos, and we hope you have a long, happy marriage with your new K-pop husband. Congratulations to the new happy couple!
