
The film 'Salmokji: Whispering Water' (directed by Lee Sang Min) has debuted at No. 1 at the box office.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system, 'Salmokji' drew 89,913 moviegoers on its opening day, April 8. Its cumulative audience has reached 116,826.
This marks the highest opening score for a horror film since 'The Medium' (120,000) in 2021. It also surpassed the Hollywood sci-fi film Project Hail Mary, which recorded 70,000 viewers.
The film is expected to spark a horror boom in theaters this April. As of 8 a.m. on April 9, Salmokji is maintaining a 91% CGV Egg Index rating from verified viewers.
'Salmokji' is a horror film set around a reservoir of the same name. It follows a filming crew that encounters something lurking deep beneath the water after visiting the site.
Kim Hye Yoon stars as Han Su In, a producer who experiences a series of mysterious incidents while on a work trip. Lee Jong Won makes his screen lead debut as Ki Tae, her former lover.
Meanwhile, 'Project Hail Mary' held onto second place at the box office with 32,099 viewers, while 'The King's Warden' ranked third with 27,524.
