As anticipation builds for the return of global K-pop group BTS, their agency HYBE has addressed recent concerns regarding the use of red lighting in an upcoming performance.

On March 18, BigHit Music stated that the red color featured in the upcoming event at Gwanghwamun Square reflects the key visual theme of BTS’s new album 'ARIRANG.' The agency emphasized that the choice of color is purely artistic and aligns with the album’s concept.

The statement also noted that the Seoul Metropolitan Government is incorporating red lighting across major landmarks in the city in coordination with HYBE’s request. Iconic sites such as N Seoul Tower and Lotte World Tower are expected to be illuminated in red to mark the occasion.

BTS is scheduled to hold a special comeback performance at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21, celebrating the release of their new album However, the decision has sparked criticism among some fans. They argue that BTS and their fanbase, known as ARMY, are traditionally associated with the color purple, raising concerns that the shift to red may carry unintended political connotations. Some critics have also questioned whether the city’s involvement risks politicizing the group’s cultural activities.

In response, HYBE reiterated that the red color is solely tied to the album’s visual identity and urged the public not to interpret the event through a political lens.
