A theatrical hit has rippled across the OTT charts.
As the film 'The King's Warden' gained momentum at the box office and actor Park Ji Hoon drew acclaim for his portrayal of King Danjong, his earlier series 'Weak Hero' has re-entered the Netflix Korea Series Top 10.
It is an unusual trajectory: Season 1 of the series has climbed back into the rankings four years after its initial release. Notably, 'Weak Hero Class 2' premiered during the streaming window of When Life Gives You Tangerines and previously made headlines after ranking No. 1 among all Korean titles on the global chart.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated box office system on February 22, 'The King's Warden' surpassed 5 million moviegoers on its 18th day of release, reaching a cumulative 5.26 million admissions as of February 21. The film topped theaters during the Lunar New Year holiday and has become one of the year’s highest-grossing releases.

In the film, Yoo Hae Jin plays the village chief, while Park Ji Hoon takes on the tragic young king Danjong. Critics have praised Park’s restrained emotional delivery and dense portrayal of the monarch’s tragic narrative. Among audiences, phrases such as “possessed by Danjong” and “Danjong syndrome” have circulated online.
In the historical genre, it is no easy task for a young actor to convincingly embody a king’s complex psychology. Park opted for a subdued vocal tone, building emotion through his gaze and measured breathing. As word of mouth spread, his filmography naturally came back into focus.
“A Career-Defining Role”: Reassessment of Park Ji Hoon
Media outlets and critics have described the performance as a “career-defining role” and said Park “has added another signature character to his résumé.” Some industry observers note that he has shed the “idol-turned-actor” label and entered the ranks of performers audiences trust to deliver.
That reassessment has extended to his previous leading projects, most notably 'Weak Hero Class 1' and 'Weak Hero Class 2.' In the series, Park played model student Yeon Si Eun, revealing a cold and calculating side starkly different from his earlier image.

R-Rated School Action Returns to Top 10
When 'Weak Hero Class 2' was released on Netflix last year, the eight-episode season quickly climbed global charts. Following the box office success of 'The King's Warden' this month, the series has once again entered Netflix Korea’s Top 10.
The numbers reflect a clear pattern: audiences who encountered Danjong in theaters migrated to OTT platforms to revisit Yeon Si Eun. While it is not uncommon for buzz around an actor to drive renewed interest in past works, it is rare for a four-year-old title to re-enter the Top 10.
Season 2 and Hints at Season 3
'Weak Hero Class 2' follows Yeon Si Eun after he transfers to Eunjang High School, where he faces escalating violence. Park expanded his emotional range and relational storytelling compared to the first season. The solidarity between Yeon and Park Hu Min, played by Ryeoun, formed a key narrative axis.

Season 2 also introduced the adult organization Cheongang more prominently. In the original webtoon, Cheongang is depicted as a group controlling the Mapo District area. In the drama, the organization emerges as a major threat, with a character linked to Na Baek Jin appearing with a Cheongang business card, heightening tension.
The finale hinted at Cheongang’s deeper involvement, suggesting that if Season 3 moves forward, conflict between Yeon Si Eun’s group and the adult organization could become a central storyline. However, no official announcement has been made regarding production or release timing for a third season.
Contrasting Roles, Expanding Range

Danjong and Yeon Si Eun are opposed characters. One is a tragic monarch in a historical epic; the other, a cool-headed top student navigating brutal school violence in a contemporary action drama.
Their emotional expressions differ as well. Danjong suppresses his inner turmoil, while Yeon oscillates between calculated strategy and explosive action.
As both roles trend simultaneously, Park Ji Hoon’s acting spectrum is being newly reassessed. For audiences and industry insiders alike, the question naturally follows: what face will he reveal next? Casting competition and investment interest in his upcoming projects are expected to intensify.
