A heartfelt story of empathy and tender solace for young people, Netflix’s film 'Pavane' was released on February 20.
Based on the novel 'Pavane for a Dead Princess' by author Park Min Gyu, Pavane follows the radiant coming-of-age journey of three individuals, Mijung, Yohan, and Kyungrok, each carrying their own wounds. As they become light to one another, they slowly learn to face life and love with newfound courage.
Go Ah Sung takes on the role of Mijung, a young woman who hides from the uncomfortable gazes of others. When she meets Kyungrok, the first person to see her without prejudice, she gradually begins to discover her own charm and strength. Go Ah Sung’s delicate and nuanced performance adds emotional depth to the film.
Having portrayed a wide range of characters throughout his career, Byun Yo Han transforms into Yohan, a free spirited soul whose warmth can quickly turn distant and whose lightheartedness can deepen into gravity. Immersed in his own world, Yohan is an unpredictable figure who radiates a unique allure.
Moon Sang Min plays Kyungrok, a former dancer forced to give up his dream in the face of harsh reality. Drawn to Mijung after a chance encounter, he begins to take tentative steps toward the future he once abandoned, embodying the awkward yet sincere spirit of youth.
Director Lee Jong Pil, known for capturing poignant slices of youth in 'Samjin Company English Class' and 'Escape,' returns with a more hopeful portrait of young adulthood through the lens of romance. Unlike the original novel, which unfolds in first-person narration, the film reconstructs the story through the perspectives of all three characters, creating a richer and more layered narrative.
At the production press conference, Lee Jong Pil revealed that he had long dreamed of making a melodrama since his teenage years. “Watching melodramas where two people meet and fall in love, I once wrote in my diary, ‘Love is what saves humanity, and cinema is ultimately melodrama,’” he shared. “I have carried the desire to create a melodrama someday for a very long time.” That long-held aspiration is fully realized in 'Pavane.'
