MC GREE completed his mandatory military service last month and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps on January 28. While many have extended congratulations for his diligent service, some criticism has emerged regarding the timing and manner of his return to broadcasting activities.
On February 4, 'Radio Star' released a video through its official channel titled 'MC GREE reports to ‘Radio Star’ just 4 hours after discharge.' The video served as a pre-release segment for episode 951, which aired the same day. It documented MC GREE traveling directly to the studio following his discharge and sharing an emotional reunion with his father, Kim Gu Ra. A separate preview video announcing his appearance, released on January 30, recorded more than 4.8 million views as of February 4 at 2 p.m., reflecting significant public attention.
In the pre-release footage, MC GREE appeared visibly more physically developed compared to his pre-enlistment image. Entering with a disciplined gait, he delivered a formal discharge report, stating, “The proud Republic of Korea Marine, Blue Dragon Sergeant Kim Dong Hyun, has completed 549 days of service from July 29, 2024 to January 28, 2026, and has been ordered to return to the embrace of my beloved parents. I hereby report.” The studio cast responded with congratulations.
There is little dispute that MC GREE’s completion of military service merits recognition. However, discussion has arisen over the fact that the recording occurred on the date of his discharge. The matter relates to differing interpretations of legal provisions concerning the precise moment a service member’s civilian status takes effect.
Under military criminal law, an individual is classified as a soldier while serving on active duty, and some interpretations hold that civilian status begins once the individual leaves the base. Conversely, Article 159 of the Civil Act provides that legal status changes at midnight on the date of discharge. Under this interpretation, MC GREE, discharged on January 28, would formally assume civilian status at 12:00 a.m. on January 29.
If interpreted strictly according to civil law, participation in a broadcast recording while still technically classified as an active-duty soldier could raise questions regarding regulations that restrict profit-generating activities. Violations of such regulations may subject ordinary service members to disciplinary measures. Although it remains difficult to determine whether this instance constitutes a legal violation, some members of the public have suggested that the situation might have been avoided.
The appearance also prompted renewed discussion regarding perceived parental privilege. As one of the longest-running talk shows on terrestrial television, 'Radio Star' is widely regarded as a highly sought-after platform within the entertainment industry. Given that his father, Kim Gura, has served as a regular host on the program for 18 years, some viewers expressed concern that MC GREE’s casting could be interpreted as preferential treatment. Additional concerns were raised that both the teaser and pre-release content centered predominantly on MC GREE, potentially limiting the visibility of other guests.
