Three sisters in India, deeply immersed in Korean culture, have tragically taken their own lives following conflicts with their father, shocking the local community.

According to local media, the sisters—aged 16, 14, and 12—jumped from the ninth floor of an apartment in Ghaziabad, India, around 2 AM local time on February 4. An eight-page note left at the scene revealed their profound attachment to Korean culture, reading, “Korea and K-pop were our lives,” and expressing resentment toward their father: “Sorry, Dad, how could you take away our lives?

Police investigations revealed that the sisters had been fascinated by Korean pop culture, including dramas, movies, music, and shows. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, their father, burdened by significant debts, did not send them to school, and they did not receive formal homeschooling. Their only source of joy came from watching Korean content on their phones at home.

Ten days before the incident, the father confiscated all their phones, citing concerns over their obsessive interest in Korean culture. He also forced the deletion of the sisters’ social media accounts, where they had been posting in a Korean-inspired style, and reportedly threatened to arrange their marriages.

In addition to Korean media, the sisters enjoyed animated shows such as Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan, and were interested in cultures from China, Japan, Thailand, and the United States. However, they were deeply saddened by their inability to move abroad to experience these cultures firsthand.

Local authorities indicated that the sisters’ immersion in Korean content and their father’s disapproval likely contributed to their extreme decision. Their father told police that the girls had “closed themselves off in their own world” after other family members refused to accept Korean culture. He justified confiscating the phones by claiming the sisters were engaged in “strange Korean games with step-by-step challenges.”

Economic and familial pressures may also have played a role. The father, a stock trader, was reportedly in debt by 20 million rupees (approximately 208,000 USD) and sold the confiscated phones. The note suggested that the sisters feared physical punishment and were adamantly opposed to marrying Indian men, indicating a possible history of coercion or abuse.

The family structure was complex: the father had five daughters and one son across two marriages. The victims were two daughters from his second marriage and one daughter from his first marriage. Local media noted that a combination of Korean cultural obsession, household conflict, and economic hardship contributed to this heartbreaking tragedy.
