The OTT variety show ‘Battle of Fates’ will re-edit a controversial episode following widespread criticism for allegedly disrespecting deceased firefighters and police officers.
On February 28, the show’s producers released a statement. They said they have listened carefully to the families of the late Fire Chief Kim Cheol Hong and Police Sergeant Lee Jae Hyun. They added that in respect of their wishes, they have decided to re-edit the relevant portions. The previously released episode will be replaced with the revised version. The statement concluded with a formal apology to the families, the fire and police personnel, and viewers who were hurt by the oversight.
The controversy stems from Episode 2, aired on February 11, which featured a mission titled 'Guess the Deceased’s Signature.' Participants attempted to guess the signatures of real-life fallen officers. One cast member referred to Sergeant Lee, who died in 2004 while apprehending a violent suspect, saying, “Isn’t getting stabbed called a ‘stab punch’?” Another segment involved Fire Chief Kim, who died in 2001 during a fire rescue, with participants speculating on the cause of death. Critics argued that turning the deaths of public servants into entertainment was deeply inappropriate.
Families and related organizations expressed strong objections. Some claimed that the production team did not adequately explain the show’s premise before seeking consent. Police and firefighter associations demanded an official apology and corrective measures.
Initially, the producers claimed that consent had been obtained. Public backlash intensified when the process was questioned. Following an initial apology on February 24, the team announced the removal and re-editing of the problematic content.
‘Battle of Fates’ is a survival-style show where 49 participants, including shamans, compete in fortune-telling challenges. The incident has reignited discussions about ethical standards and the portrayal of sensitive subjects in OTT programming.
