People Power Party lawmaker Bae Hyun Jin has become the subject of controversy after visiting the funeral of late actor Ahn Sung Ki, with criticism focusing on her attire and demeanor during an on site media interview.
Bae visited the funeral hall set up at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital in Seocho District on January 5 to pay her respects. After completing her condolence visit, she spoke with reporters and reflected on her connection with the late actor.
“I first met him while working together at film critic awards ceremonies during my early days as a rookie announcer,” she said. “He had been ill for a long time and endured many hardships. I hope that, just as he shared so much love with the people of Korea, he will now receive even greater love in heaven and rest peacefully.”
When asked about a memorable performance, Bae recalled a striking scene from one of his films, saying, “There is a scene where he tears into a raw chicken. It was shocking. That showed how he always tried to present something new.” She also mentioned his role in 'Hansan: Rising Dragon,' adding, “He wore extremely heavy armor and gave his all to the performance. I believe it will remain unforgettable even a hundred years from now.”

She concluded her remarks by saying, “I hope he is no longer in pain and can watch over his family and bless them from heaven.” Following the interview, criticism spread online as netizens pointed out that Bae wore a white outfit and appeared to smile at several moments during her remarks. Many argued that both her clothing and facial expressions were inappropriate for a funeral setting.
Comments included, “She is fully made up, wearing bright clothes, and even smiling during the interview,” and “This is the first time I have seen such a bright interview at a funeral.” Others wrote, “Is it real that she came to a funeral wearing white?” and “Her outfit and expression are unsettling. Is she really attending a memorial?”
However, some defended the lawmaker, suggesting that she may have visited the funeral immediately after attending official political schedules and did not have time to change her clothing.
Meanwhile, the late Ahn Sung Ki debuted in the 1957 film 'Twilight Train' and appeared in more than 170 films over a career spanning 69 years. He was declared in remission from blood cancer in 2019 but recently suffered a relapse. After collapsing at his home on December 30, he passed away at approximately 9 a.m. on January 5 at the age of 74.
The funeral hall has been set up in Room 31 at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Oh So Young, and his sons, Davin and Philip. The funeral is being held as an official film industry funeral organized by the Shin Young Kyun Arts and Culture Foundation and the Korea Film Actors Association. A funeral committee has been formed to honor the late actor, with veteran actor Shin Young Kyun serving as honorary chairman.
Actors Lee Byung Hun, Lee Jung Jae, Jung Woo Sung, and Park Chul Min will serve as pallbearers. Memorial addresses will be delivered by director Bae Chang Ho and actor Jung Woo Sung. The funeral procession is scheduled for 6 a.m. on January 9, and the burial site is located at Byeolgeurida in Yangpyeong.
