Psy remains embroiled in controversy over allegations that he had prescription sleeping pills picked up on his behalf, and police have now offered an update on the investigation.
On November 17, an official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said during a regular press briefing held at the agency’s Jongno office, “A significant portion of the investigation has been completed,” but added, “There are materials that still need to be reviewed, so the investigation is ongoing and it is difficult to discuss specific details at this stage.”
The Seodaemun Police Station launched an investigation in August, booking Psy on suspicion of violating the Medical Service Act, including alleged proxy pickup of psychotropic prescription drugs and receiving remote prescriptions. No details regarding any summons for questioning have been publicly disclosed.
Police previously stated they had detected indications that, from 2022 until recently, Psy received prescriptions for the psychotropic medications Xanax and Stilnox from a university hospital in Seoul without in-person consultations, and that his manager allegedly picked up the medications on his behalf.
At the time, Psy’s agency P Nation acknowledged part of the issue, saying, “It was clearly a mistake and an oversight that prescription sleep medication—considered a specialist drug—was picked up by a third party. We apologize.” However, the agency denied other allegations, explaining, “Psy has been taking sleep medication prescribed in appropriate dosages by medical professionals, and there were instances where a third party collected the medication. But there was no proxy prescription.”
A practicing physician, identified as Dr. A, challenged the agency’s statement on his personal channel, stating, “What does it even mean to say it wasn’t a ‘proxy prescription’ but a ‘proxy pickup’? When someone other than the patient collects the prescription, that is a proxy prescription. Yesterday, the agency said he had simply been receiving remote prescriptions for years and that it wasn’t proxy prescribing, but now they seem to have changed their story. Any doctor would know why that wording shifted.”
Meanwhile, Psy was recently spotted in an unexpected setting. Last month, he drew attention after being seen with G-Dragon, CL, and the director of French luxury fashion house Vetements.
