The Korean Medical Association (KMA) has issued a statement regarding allegations that singer Psy obtained prescription psychotropic drugs through a third party. Psy is currently under police investigation for allegedly having someone else collect medications on his behalf.
During a regular briefing on August 28, the KMA emphasized, “The recent allegations that a well-known celebrity received prescription psychotropic drugs and had them collected by a third party should not be seen merely as a personal issue. This is a serious matter that could impact the safety of society at large and must be addressed thoroughly.”
The association further stated, “We plan to carefully verify the facts of this case through an expert review panel and urge the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and enforce the law strictly. Given the increasing prevalence of telemedicine, it is crucial to discuss institutional measures to ensure the safe use of prescription drugs, including psychotropic medications.”
The KMA added, “We will strengthen our self-regulatory capabilities to prevent recurrence of such violations and collaborate with the government and the National Assembly as necessary.”
Psy is alleged to have received prescriptions for the psychotropic drugs Xanax and Stilnox from a Seoul-based university hospital without in-person consultations since 2022, and arranged for these medications to be collected by his manager or other third parties.
Under current Korean medical law, only the doctor who conducts a direct examination of a patient may issue a prescription, and prescriptions cannot be collected by anyone other than the patient.
Professor A, who allegedly facilitated Psy’s proxy prescription at the Seoul university hospital, has been booked for violating medical law and is under investigation. According to preliminary reports, Professor A denies wrongdoing, claiming that the consultations were conducted remotely.
