Nana, the actress and former member of After School, and her mother have been cleared of any charges after injuring a man who broke into their home in Guri, Gyeonggi Province. Police concluded that the injuries inflicted during the struggle were the result of legitimate self-defense.
On November 22, the Guri Police Station announced that a man in his 30s, identified as A, who had been arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and injury, will be sent to the prosecution on November 24. Public attention had focused on whether the injuries A sustained during the confrontation would be considered self-defense under the law.
According to police, A broke into Nana’s home armed with a weapon, which led to a physical struggle as Nana and her mother attempted to stop him. During the altercation, A suffered a laceration to his jaw, believed to have been caused by his own weapon.
Investigators reviewed statements from both sides to determine whether Nana and her mother's actions fell under Article 21(1) of the Criminal Act. This clause recognizes self-defense when there is a present wrongful infringement and the defensive act has reasonable grounds.
A police representative stated, “There was a real and immediate threat against the victims, and our investigation confirmed that they did not inflict excessive or severe injury. Based on the overall circumstances, their actions were deemed legitimate self-defense, so they were not booked.”
On November 18, two days after his arrest, A requested a detention review, claiming that police did not inform him of his Miranda rights during the arrest. The court rejected his request.
A is accused of breaking into Nana’s home in Achun-dong, Guri, around 6 a.m. on November 15 while armed with a knife, threatening the actress and her mother, injuring them, and demanding money. Investigations revealed that he climbed a ladder he had brought with him, reached the veranda, and entered through an unlocked door.
Despite his relatively small build, A allegedly assaulted Nana’s mother, including choking her when he encountered her inside the home. Hearing her mother's screams, Nana woke up and intervened. The mother and daughter managed to overpower the intruder by restraining his arm until police arrived.
Police stated that A was unemployed and that the incident was not related to obsessive fandom or an attempt to target a celebrity’s residence. A reportedly told investigators, “I thought no one would be home. I did not know a celebrity lived there. I committed the crime because I needed money for living expenses.”
Nana’s agency SUBLIME, previously shared that A entered the home armed and attempted an attack, and that Nana’s mother lost consciousness after sustaining serious injuries during the struggle. Both Nana and her mother are currently receiving treatment and have regained consciousness.
SUBLIME added, “As the safety and well-being of the victims and their families are our top priority, we ask everyone to refrain from speculation, false information, and invasive content that may cause secondary harm.”
