Amid growing speculation that the Chinese location shoot for 'Delusion' has been canceled, the production company has stepped forward to clarify the situation.
On October 15th KST, Showbox, the production company behind the upcoming Disney+ original series Delusion, stated, “The filming location is still under consideration and nothing has been finalized.”
Earlier that day, a media outlet reported that 'Delusion' had initially planned to shoot scenes in China but canceled those plans. The cancellation sparked rumors that it was related to the recent controversy surrounding another Disney+ series, 'Tempest', and its lead actress Jun Ji Hyun.
In Tempest, which premiered on September 10th, Jun Ji Hyun’s character, Seo Moon Joo, remarks, “Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall near the border.” This line triggered backlash from some Chinese netizens, who criticized the dialogue as politically provocative.
Following the controversy, rumors circulated that Chinese advertisers had launched a boycott against Jun Ji Hyun, and that several brands she endorsed had terminated their contracts. However, her agency Pitch Company denied the speculation, stating, “The advertisement cancellations were unrelated to Tempest and had already been finalized prior to the show’s premiere.”
Set in Gyeongseong (colonial-era Seoul) in 1935, Delusion follows Yoon Yi Ho, a painter who is commissioned to paint a portrait of Song Jung Hwa—a mysterious woman shrouded in rumors, having remained hidden from the world for over half a century. As he works on the portrait, he uncovers secrets about her haunting past.
The series stars Suzy and Kim Seon Ho, and is directed by Han Jae Rim, known for the films 'The Face Reader' and 'The King'. Filming began in April and is currently ongoing, with a global release scheduled for next year on Disney+.
