The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has formally revised its 'Standard Broadcast Appearance Contract for a Popular Culture Artist' for the first time in 12 years.
This revision, going into effect on July 31 KST, will expand the 'Standard Broadcast Appearance Contract' to the fuller title of 'Standard Broadcast·Video Content Appearance Contract'. The expansion factors in the prevalence of online streaming services and platforms in the broadcasting industry. Additionally, the revision will broaden the eligibility of the standard contract to also include not only actors and singers, but artists performing in any area of music, dramas, varieties, and other media contents.
Another revision to the contract places restrictions on the transfer of an artist's right to perform to other platforms without the artist's consent, requiring the broadcasting station or production company to agree on the specific platforms where an artist's performances may be aired prior to broadcast. Any broadcasting through platforms not agreed upon during the time of signing must undergo further negotiation.
Finally, should a broadcasting station or production company incur damages as a result of a public scandal caused by an artist, the standard contract grants the former the right to demand compensation. While the previous version of the contract only outlined crimes such as illegal drug use or gambling, the revision introduces controversial issues such as school bullying and private life scandals.
The revised 'Standard Broadcast Appearance Contract for a Popular Culture Artist' will be distributed beginning on July 31 KST.
