Latin singer and rapper DY (stage name Daddy Yankee) is making a surprise comeback, nearly two years after announcing his retirement.
On July 11, HYBE Latin America revealed, “We have signed Latin music icon DY,” and simultaneously released his new single “Sonríele.”
DY is considered one of the most successful artists in Latin music history. Since his 1995 debut, he helped ignite the reggaeton boom with his hit “Gasolina.” His mega-hit “Despacito” with Luis Fonsi dominated the Billboard Hot 100 chart, holding the No. 1 spot for 16 consecutive weeks. The music video for "Despacito" is currently the second most viewed video on YouTube, with over 8.7 billion views.
Back in 2023, DY announced his retirement following his final concert. At the time, he stated, “I’m finally seeing the finish line,” signaling his intention to redefine the next chapter of his life.
HYBE Latin America persistently persuaded him to return. HYBE’s chairman, Bang Si Hyuk, also met with DY personally to share their passion and vision for music. As a result, the new track “Sonríele” was born. The title means “Offer a Smile” in Spanish and delivers a message about perseverance and gratitude for the little things.
HYBE expects DY’s addition to significantly expand its influence in the Latin market. The company previously signed artists such as Emmanuel del Real of Café Tacvba and Adrián Cota. Actor-singers Juan Daniel Garcia Treviño and América Fernández are also part of HYBE Latin America, receiving broad support for their multi-faceted careers.
HYBE Latin America is also working on major projects. Next month, it will launch the reality show 'Santos Bravos,' which features a five-member global boy group. Another music show, a band audition program co-produced with Spanish-language U.S. network Telemundo, 'Pase a la Fama,' premiered this June and is airing to a strong reception.
