A recent post on a popular online community garnered attention among Korean netizens after it was revealed that a popular KakaoTalk open chatroom dedicated to NCT's Jaemin was sold and repurposed for an entirely different topic.
KakaoTalk Open Chat is a type of chatroom on the app that allows users to connect based on shared interests without needing to add each other as friends. These rooms are searchable and open to anyone with the link, and users can join anonymously under nicknames. Due to the accessibility, some popular fansom chatrooms can attract hundreds of users over time.
According to a netizen who brought this to attention, the NCT Jaemin fan chat was abruptly converted into a travel discussion group, particularly about Vietnam trips. Screenshots of the chatroom show the original operators being replaced, and the users in the chat expressing confusion and frustration over the unexpected change.
The new room operator reportedly confirmed that they had purchased the chatroom from its original creator and would now be using it for a different purpose.
According to online community users, stated that popular open chatrooms are sold because the ones with high activity and lots of hearts show up well in search results. One user explained, "They bought that open chatroom because it shows up well in search results. Open chatrooms with high activity and lots of hearts are easier to find, so it's easier to attract new people."
