On June 19th, singer and actress IU visited an art exhibition featuring works by elderly female artists from Jeju Island whose paintings inspired the Netflix series 'When Life Gives You Tangerines.' Her visit has become a hot topic for both her heartfelt loyalty and her thoughtful gift.
Despite her busy schedule, IU took time to meet the Jeju grandmothers who created the artwork. Sharing a post saying “I came to keep my promise to the Jeju grandmother artists Gwangrye Ddol and Ae Soon,” IU personally attended the exhibition and enjoyed the display which sparked widespread attention.
The exhibition organizers shared multiple photos with the caption “Ae Soon has returned to Jeju.” They described IU’s visit by saying “She came as Ae Soon from the role of Gwangrye Ddol to keep her promise. The Seonhul Painting Workshop is a creative haven for grandmothers with an average age of eighty-seven who have transitioned from farmers to painters.” They added “Though A Ae Soon initially said she would quietly view the exhibition, she appeared like Santa Claus carrying a bundle of gifts.”
Following the rules, IU wore gloves and carefully selected a companion painting bag. She attentively admired paintings such as those featuring Gwan Sik and sunflowers and even prepared a personal letter to give to the grandmothers.

The organizers noted “IU embraced the grandmothers with open arms symbolizing solidarity. This act of keeping a promise rekindled a bond of loyalty. Like Ae Soon, she laid a silk scarf, a magical cloak, over their shoulders to pave their path forward.” The scarf IU gifted was an exquisite Hermes scarf which added even more significance to the gesture.
Netizens responded warmly saying “It is so beautiful how she sincerely appreciates the grandmothers’ paintings,” “Despite her busy schedule she shows such loyalty her kindness never ends,” “Her gift sense is incredible,” and “How did she find a perfect flower patterned scarf that matches so well with the brand?”
