Serious allegations have emerged against the production team of the Netflix original drama 'When Life Gives You Tangerines.' The accusations include mistreatment of on-set staff and extras during the filming process. In response, Netflix stated that it is currently investigating the situation.

On May 28, a Netflix representative told News1 that the company is working closely with Korean production partners to improve working conditions. The representative added that Netflix is verifying the facts related to the reported incidents and will thoroughly review the results to prevent similar issues from happening again.

The controversy began when a social media user posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. The user claimed to have witnessed problematic behavior by the crew of 'When Life Gives You Tangerines.' The post mentioned that property damage by film crews is often overlooked, and described how crew members used industrial lacquer spray on a rented bus. When they were caught, one crew member allegedly said that the damage could simply be cleaned off with thinner. The user expressed frustration, saying that unprofessional behavior often leads to accidents on set.

Another user shared their experience of helping with driving on the set due to a staff shortage. This person said they were not paid for their time and were verbally mistreated. They also questioned how the production managed a 60 billion KRW (approximately $43.65 million) budget when they attempted to lower rental costs, pay low wages, and avoid paying overtime. The user said they had to shoot in Jeonju, Beolgyo, and Andong on three consecutive days using different buses each time, without being provided lodging. They were given only a burger and soda for dinner and had no waiting area, forcing them to spend hours outside in freezing temperatures.

More accounts followed. One user said that the show was known among background actors for having difficult schedules. Extras were allegedly forced to cut their hair. The user said the production team did not want to spend money on anyone other than the lead actors. Senior extras were reportedly left outside in cold weather without food or shelter. Instead of providing catering or a tea table, they were taken to random restaurants and told to eat within 30 minutes. The costume team allegedly banned thermal underwear in winter, claiming it would affect the clothing fit. The user described the treatment as inhumane.

These accounts have sparked public outrage. Many people are criticizing the production team and raising concerns about deeper problems in the Korean drama industry. Netflix has said it will release an official statement after confirming the facts.

Meanwhile, 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' tells the adventurous life story of Ae Soon, a spirited rebel born in Jeju (played by IU and Moon So Ri), and Gwan Sik, a devoted and steadfast man (played by Park Bo Gum and Park Hae Joon), unfolding across the four seasons. Since its release in March, the drama has gained significant popularity.
