Cinematic Bridges: 5 Korean Remakes of Japanese Films

The cross-cultural exchange between South Korea and Japan is truly fascinating, with both countries' film industries continuously drawing inspiration from one another and adapting films into their languages. These adaptations stand as a testament to the universality of storytelling, showcasing the beauty of both cinemas while adding their unique flavour to each narrative.

Here are five notable Korean films adapted from popular Japanese films that prove great stories can transcend borders and be beautifully reinterpreted for new audiences.

MY GIRL AND I

Starring Cha Tae-hyun and Song Hye-kyo, ‘My Girl and I’ is a poignant coming-of-age romance movie released in 2005 that traces the bittersweet first love between a shy student and a bright, lively classmate. Adapted from the Japanese box office hit ‘Crying Out Love in the Center of the World,’ the film explores young love, loss, and the lingering ache of memories.

GOING BY THE BOOK

The 2007 action comedy movie ‘Going By The Book’ follows a by-the-rules police officer tasked with simulating a bank robbery drill, only for him to take the job a bit too seriously. Adapted from the 1991 Japanese film ‘Asobi no jikan wa owaranai,’ the Korean version amplifies the humour and social satire, keeping audiences thoroughly entertained. Its sharp pacing and quirky characters made it a standout hit in Korea's comedy scene.

LUCK KEY

A delightful blend of action and comedy, ‘Luck-Key’ features Yoo Hae-jin in a career-defining role as a hitman who, after a fateful accident in a sauna, swaps identities with an unlucky actor played by Lee Joon. Based on the Japanese film ‘Key of Life’ by Kenji Uchida, the Korean adaptation ramps up the humour and heartfelt moments, delivering a box office hit.

BE WITH YOU

Starring stars of the K-entertainment industry, So Ji-sub and Son Ye-jin, ‘Be With You’ is a heartrending tale of love. Adapted from the 2004 Japanese film of the same name, the story revolves around a terminally ill woman who makes an impossible promise to her husband to return to him after her death. With breathtaking cinematography and stirring performances, ‘Be With You’ became a tearjerker classic in Korea.

JOSÉE

‘Josée’ is a 2020 Korean movie adapted from the popular Japanese film ‘Josee, the Tiger and the Fish,’ itself adapted from Seiko Tanabe’s short story. Beloved K-star Nam Joo Hyuk played the lead as a kind university student who meets a young woman in a wheelchair, played by Han Ji Min, and falls in love with her. The adaptation opts for a more melancholic, introspective tone, exploring themes of loneliness, connection, and unspoken desires.
