On May 15, a new video was uploaded to Choo Sung Hoon’s official YouTube channel, capturing his recent visit to Los Angeles.
In the video, the mixed martial arts fighter opened up about his views on racial discrimination in the United States and revealed why he ultimately decided against sending his daughter, Sa Rang, to a prestigious school in New York City.
When asked whether he had personally experienced racism in the U.S., Choo replied, "I didn’t experience that when I lived in America. Especially in Hawaii, where there are many Asians, I never felt any discrimination."
He then shared a story about nearly enrolling his daughter in a prominent New York school with his wife, Japanese model Shiho Yano. "We went to a really good school and even attended an interview. But it was just too expensive," he said.
More importantly, Choo revealed concerns about racism in New York. "When I spoke to someone who lives there, they said New York is actually one of the most racist places. They said, ‘Why send a child to a scary place where there’s so much discrimination?’ That really stuck with me, and I decided against it. In the end, I’m glad we didn’t go through with it. We chose Hawaii instead," he explained.
When the production crew noted Choo’s apparent interest in his daughter’s education, he responded humbly: "She doesn’t have to study or play sports if she doesn’t want to. The same goes for Shiho. We never force her to do anything — we just say, ‘It would be nice if you did.’ That’s all."
Choo Sung Hoon married Shiho Yano in 2009, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Sa Rang, in 2011.
