
Lee Sang Yong, the beloved South Korean television personality known for his iconic 'Popeye Uncle' image, has passed away today (May 9) at the age of 81. His agency, Emade, confirmed the news, stating that Lee Sang Yong died earlier this morning.
According to a representative from his agency, Lee Sang Yong felt unwell with symptoms resembling a cold and went to a nearby hospital in the Seocho district of Seoul. Unfortunately, he collapsed on his way back and was rushed to Seoul St. Mary's Hospital for emergency treatment but tragically passed away.
The agency emphasized that Lee Sang Yong had no significant health issues prior to this incident, noting that he had even participated in an event just the day before (May 8). There were no reports of any chronic conditions that might have contributed to his sudden passing.
The family is currently in discussions about the funeral arrangements, and further details will be shared later.
Lee Sang Yong gained widespread recognition as the MC of the variety show 'Stage of Friendship,' where he became known as 'Popeye Uncle' due to his strong and cheerful persona. He also hosted several other shows, including 'Let’s Gather and Sing,' 'Popeye’s Tour of the Provinces,' and 'Let’s Go to the Market,' contributing significantly to South Korean television.
His contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including the Order of Civil Merit in 1987, the Order of Sports Merit in 1990, a Minister of Culture and Tourism commendation in 1998, and the TV Star Award at the 2014 Cable TV Broadcasting Awards.
Lee Sang Yong was also known for his charitable work, particularly in supporting over 560 children suffering from heart diseases, providing them with life-saving surgeries. His kind-hearted efforts have left a lasting impact, both in the entertainment industry and beyond.
He will be fondly remembered for his vibrant presence and heartwarming contributions to both television and society.
