Earlier this week, actors Park Jung Min and Go Min Si appeared as guests on the YouTube show 'Salon Drip', hosted by Jang Do Yeon, in order to promote their new film 'Smugglers' (2023).
On this day, it was pointed out that Jang Do Yeon, Park Jung Min, and Go Min Si had one commonality - that they all had early birthdays. In East Asian countries such as South Korea, where both the Julian calendar and the Lunar calendar are used, children born early on in the year (January~February) on the Julian calendar may have been born a year earlier according to the Lunar calendar. As a result, many Koreans with early birthdays often encounter issues when deciding how to address their peers, with or without honorifics and polite speech!
First, actor Park Jung Min revealed, "I tend to be friends with people born in both years. I am friends with 1986-liners since we went to school together, and I'm friends with 1987-liners since I was also born in that year."
He then added on, "Some time ago, I worked on a production with Ryu Joon Yeol and Chun Woo Hee. Well, Ryu Joon Yeol was born in 1986 and Chun Woo Hee was born in 1987, and I am friends with both. But when the three of us got together, Chun Woo Hee called Ryu Joon Yeol 'oppa', and that put me in a state of chaos. In the end, the issue was never resolved. I guess we will all just grow apart."
Go Min Si also shared a similar case of a "friendship triangle" struggle she faced with her co-stars from the Netflix original series, 'Sweet Home'. She said, "[During 'Sweet Home'], I got along well with both Song Kang and Lee Do Hyun, and it was established that Song Kang and I were friends. He was born in 1994. Well, one day, Lee Do Hyun who was born in 1995 said to me, 'I thought about it, and it turns out, why should I call you 'noona'? You were born in the same year as me.' So then I agreed that we would be friends."
Go Min Si continued, "Then, after that, Song Kang came to me and said, 'Why is Lee Do Hyun calling you 'ya'? If you're friends with him, shouldn't you call me 'oppa'?"
According to the actress, "When the three of us got together after that, the issue always came up. But now, we are all just friends."

I understand about honorifics though and can see where it might become confusing, I guess its up to the individuals what they are comfortable with but you always have to remain respectful, especially if the person is older.
