10 Must-Watch Childhood Friends to Lovers K-Dramas

AKP STAFF

When we were a lot younger, we had different kinds of friends we met, some from our neighborhood, some from our school, or other ways. Some might stay as our friends, and sometimes we outgrow them. In K-Dramas, however, some of our childhood friends transform into someone we cherish even more than we imagined, someone who will be our better half.

There may be a lot of friends-turned-lovers plots among K-Dramas, but there are also some of them who started being friends when they were way younger. The story would really get to your heart, from the good-natured bantering of friends up to the moment they finally realize that they do not see each other as just friends anymore.

Here are some of the many childhood friends-to-lovers K-Dramas you would enjoy watching!

"Bubblegum"

Park Ri Hwan (Lee Dong Wook), who comes from a wealthy family, now runs his own clinic and practices oriental medicine. He was raised alongside Kim Haeng Ah (Jung Ryeo Won), a radio producer who has been his best friend since they were young. Haeng Ah's parents passed away when she was a young child, and after her father passed away, Ri Hwan's mother took care of her. Since Ri Hwan is opposed to them being together, Haeng Ah is taking things cautiously even though she and Ri Hwan each have affection for one another.

"20th Century Boy and Girl"

The drama revolves around the relationship between childhood best friends, Sa Jin Jin (Han Ye Seul) and Gong Ji Won (Kim Ji Suk). Gong Ji Won is an investment banker, whereas Sa Jin Jin is an A-list actress who is renowned for never dating anyone. Despite the fact that they haven't seen one another in a while, fate brings them back together. Despite Ji Won and Jin Jin's very gradual emotional disclosure, their relationship is kind, gentle, and wholly supportive. Regardless of whether it doesn't favor what he wants, Ji Won never blocks the progress of Jin Jin's career or personal goals, and vice versa.

"Reply 1988"

The middle child of her family and the sole girl in a group of five neighborhood friends, Sung Duk Seon (Lee Hye Ri) notoriously ranks 999th in school. She has a bright and caring attitude despite not being intellectually gifted, not to mention her kind-heartedness. Alongside her male friends, Duk Seon grows through her teenage years. While the drama revolves around trying to learn the mystery of who she eventually marries, it is seen how two of her friends look at her in a different light; Kim Jung Hwan (Ryu Jun Yeol), a sweetheart but doesn't often share his emotions, and Choi Taek (Park Bo Gum), who upon knowing another friend loves the person he loves too, lightly falters as he has to weigh romance over friendship.

"Fight for My Way"

Running around the story of four best friends, they continue to grow despite being considered as people who lack abilities. Former prominent taekwondo player Ko Dong Man (Park Seo Joon) had to give up the sport due to a traumatic background and is now an unknown mixed martial arts competitor. A powerful and outspoken girl named Choi Ae Ra (Kim Ji Won) is his long-time best friend. She works at the information desk of a department shop but aspires to work as an announcer. Despite being ineligible, she has not yet completely abandoned her aspirations and continues to work toward realizing them. Both of them chase their dreams together and eventually realize that they aren't just best friends.

"My First First Love"

Five young people and their chaotic experiences with the idea of first love are the protagonists of the drama. With some of his friends planning to unannouncedly move into Yun Tae O (Ji Soo)'s house for their own personal reasons, they have to learn how to live together and take care of each other. One of them is Han Song I (Jung Chae Yeon). Since they were both in elementary school, Tae O and Song I have been great friends, and Tae O constantly feels compelled to look out for her. As a result, he has always struggled with his affection for her and frequently has a secret crush on her. Nevertheless, Song I initially perceives their relationship as platonic. But eventually, as their spend more time together, they realize that what they feel for each other is not exactly just best friends.

"She Was Pretty"

Young Ji Sung Joon (Park Seo Joon) was seen as an unappealing boy with poor self-esteem after suffering from bullying. Sung Joon was befriended by young Kim Hye Jin (Hwang Jung Eum), a beautiful and gentle girl from a wealthy household. But as their circumstances change up, even if Hye Jin wanted to meet her first love, she ended up asking her attractive best friend to show up in her place. Sung Joon later becomes her boss and the youngest deputy chief editor in Korea, which is contrary to what she had originally believed would be the end of her fate with him. She keeps trying to do her best regardless the setbacks. But although Sung Joon doesn't realize that she has been his childhood best friend and first love, he finally begins to fall for her.

"Start-Up"

Although a different way of showing a childhood friends-to-lovers plot, the drama showcased how Han Ji Pyeong (Kim Seon Ho) became Seo Dal Mi (Bae Suzy)'s childhood friend after being helped by Dal Mi's grandmother and eventually became her supposed first love after writing letters upon her grandmother's request under the name of Nam Do San (Nam Joo Hyuk). As they grew up, their fates became even more tangled as Dal Mi meets Do San, the founder of Samsan Tech, who, in reality, did not know her. He learns that Dal Mi falsely believes that he was her first love, therefore he makes the decision to advance in the hopes of making that belief come true. However, Ji Pyeong learns of it, not to mention that he also loves Dal Mi.

"Chocolate"

With a friendship that starts with a chocolate treat, Moon Cha Young (Ha Ji Won) accepts the dish that Lee Kang (Yoon Kye Sang), a charming young lad with aspirations of becoming a chef, prepares her, which she eats enthusiastically. Lee Kang invites her again in the afternoon for a special chocolate treat, but she doesn't show up due to her pageant. Despite this, whenever they met, there were these inescapable overtones of abuse and loneliness emanating from her. Eventually, as they grow, Lee Kang becomes a neurologist despite being trained as a chef, while Cha Young becomes a chef despite being brought up to be an actress and crosses their paths once more.

"Romance is a Bonus Book"

Even though they have been friends for a long time... The drama begins with Kang Dan Yi (Lee Na Young) doing her best to deal with the effects of her separation and unemployment. As chance would have it, she ended up working with Cha Eun Ho (Lee Jong Suk) at Gyeoroo Publishing. This drama does a good job of illustrating how being friends for so long may eventually become lovers. Every episode serves as a reminder of how well they know one other's minor quirks and can tell how the other is feeling just by looking at them. If you're a lover of this trope, both two will make an indelible mark on your heart because of the care and love that went into writing their relationship.

"Come and Hug Me"

After his father kills her parents, Han Jae Yi (Jin Ki Joo) and Chae Do Jin (Jang Ki Yong) have a tragic friendship and relationship that is forced to end when they are children. Jae Yi, an actress, and Do Jin, a detective seeking redemption for his father's transgressions, are now both grown-ups. These two would-be lovers have clung to the priceless memories of their time together, but because their unfortunate fates have brought them together, they must work to get past the prejudice and challenges they will encounter. Even if the universe and even fate appear to be against their relationship, they consistently seem to find comfort in one another.
