Why idols renew their contract with SM Entertainment

AKP STAFF

In the K-pop industry, idols are produced by entertainment companies as the agency is behind the planning, training, and debuting of these idol groups. Thereafter, it is up to the group and idol to put in hard work to build a name for themselves as well as gain popularity.

However, idols are usually under an initial contract of seven years with the agency they debut with and are left to make a decision to renew the contract with the existing entertainment company or seek a different agency that will offer a better deal.

Recently, one netizen started a discussion on Nate Pann, a popular Korean online community, sharing the reason they think idols renew their contract with SM Entertainment.

According to this netizen, SM Entertainment is one of the few companies that allow and support their artists in different endeavors in their careers. The netizen explained, "Girls' Generation for example. The members have much affection towards the group but wanted to go to other companies and they let them. [The company] also let them mention other members and didn't stop them from continuing group activities. Even though the term is long, the members appear in entertainment programs together and do everything together. ex) appearing on 'You Quiz' together."

The poster continued to explain, "SM's YoonA or Yuri focuses on being actresses and SM obtained Keyest Entertainment, which is a company that specializes in managing actors, and so [SM] supports them fully if they want to do acting."

Additionally, the netizen also mentioned how SM Entertainment also gives full support to artists who want to focus on appearing in entertainment programs and variety programs like Super Junior's Heechul and Shindong. The poster also wrote, "The idols who debuted also can promote as solo artists if they want to like BoA, Taeyeon, Taemin, Baekhyun, Hyoyeon, Joy, Kai, Suho and more."

In other words, according to the netizen who wrote the post, SM Entertainment idols are given more opportunities to try other fields in the entertainment industry and are given full support by the company.

Other netizens joined and share their thoughts on this opinion. They commented, "I know fans don't like SM but if I was an SM artist, I think the company is actually really good. SM Entertainment allows you to constantly promote/ allows you to be an actor/ they don't care if you date if you've promoted long enough/ you get to do group promotions when the time comes/ they release albums regardless of how successful it is/ and you get to get promoted in the company. BoA and Kangta probably will be there even when they're in their 40s. It's actually a good company," "I think what this post is saying is true. They allow the artists do what they want - solo or acting - regardless of the results," "Just looking at Key and Taeyeon, they look so free. Also, they are all close to each other and close to Lee Soo Man," "but this post doesn't mention the other side if you cross them you get blacklisted lol," and "Well, if you leave the company after fighting with the, you get sued and blacklisted so you can't appear on broadcasts."

I don't think SM is the same SM as before. I feel like they've learned from their previous mistakes and they're now taking better care of their artists beyond promotions and comebacks.

its because once you're SM there is nowhere else to go UP when it comes to being a singer. During your peak, you are treated like a VIP and even once you're not their favorite anymore you still have access to amenities any artist would kill to have.
