Drama industry insiders have revealed the alleged reason why the original scriptwriter of the 2001 film 'Bungee Jumping' opposed the drama remake of the story in 2021.
Previously, Kakao TV began work on a drama remake of 'Bungee Jumping', originally starring Lee Byung Hyun and Lee Eun Joo. Actor Lee Hyun Wook and NCT's Jaehyun were some of the first stars to be cast for the drama remake, and Kakao TV planned to work closely with the original production company of the film to release the series by 2022.
Then, on December 9, Kakao TV delivered the sudden news that the drama remake of 'Bungee Jumping' has been cancelled. Kakao reps cited a concern raised by the film's original scriptwriter, who worked on the 2001 project, as the main reason for the sudden decision, but did not go into further detail.
Now, according to industry insiders, the drama's cancellation may be credited to the original scriptwriter's "religious beliefs". One media outlet reported,
"This particular scriptwriter became a devoted Christian some time after working on the script for 'Bungee Jumping' in 2001. When the scriptwriter came across the news that the film was being remade into a drama, they contacted the director of the film's production company, and expressed that they strongly opposed the remake of the story due to their religious beliefs. It's said that the scriptwriter also emphasized their intentions to take strong action should the production company proceed with the remake without taking into account their wishes. There was no room for negotiation, of the monetary kind of any other, as the opposition was strictly based on religious inclination."
Meanwhile, the story of 'Bungee Jumping' centers around a man named Seo In Woo, who is unable to forget his deceased lover, Tae Hee. In Woo is a high school teacher, and one day, he meets a male student who speaks and acts exactly in the same ways as his deceased lover. In Woo begins developing romantic feelings for the student, Hyun Bin.
