BTS’s Jimin’s solo dance in “Spring Day” gets a thumbs up from a Korean culture and art researcher for combining mastery of dance with K-pop

STAR CONTRIBUTOR

“Jimin is greatly influenced by having studied dance as his major and combines mastery of dance with K-pop sensibilities.”

On February 15, a review of BTS’s dances and choreography by a Korean culture and art researcher Youngin Jo from Korea Culture and Art Society was featured on Weverse magazine. According to the Youngin Jo, BTS’s choreography is noteworthy for the important cultural phenomenon it has created in the music industry. The biggest boyband in the world uses both their music and dances, unbound by any language barrier, to communicate their messages.

The researcher compared “Blood, Sweat & Tears” to sabangchigi, a Korean traditional dance and “Boy With Luv” to ganggangsullae, another traditional dance.

In this very accurate review, one member’s solo performance was highlighted. BTS’s main dancer and lead vocalist Park Jimin and his solo dance in “Spring Day” was emphasized.

According to Youngin Jo, “during Jimin’s solo dance in ‘Spring Day’, he raises his feet skyward proportionately to the strength he uses to draw in his legs. The way he shifts his center of gravity and the connecting movement between his arms and each step, are strikingly similar to the movements found in modern and Korean interpretive dance.”

The researcher further concludes that Jimin is greatly influenced by having studied dance as his major and that he combines his mastery of dance with K-pop sensibilities to unlock new possibilities.

BTS’s Jimin’s fans couldn’t agree more because Jimin’s iconic solo dance in “Spring Day” is just so graceful and beautiful to watch.

Jimin graduated as a “Top Dancer in Modern Dance” from Busan High School of Arts, a prestigious art school in South Korea where he majored in modern dance. Jimin is a formidable dancer, charming and very talented.

Jimin, using his unmatched talent, can gracefully combine different influences such as ballet, hip-hop, popping, contemporary, acrobatics and even traditional Korean dances.

On February 2019, he received a plaque of appreciation from the Kim Baek Bong Korean Fan Dance Conservation Society for his iconic Korean fan dance performance at the 2018 Melon Music Awards. Jimin beautifully interpreted a Korean fan dance which helped raised the status and aesthetic value of the Korean fan dance globally.

Jimin reactors to his performances always come from different backgrounds of dance. There are professional ballet dancers, contemporary dancers, cultural dancers, K-pop dancers all reacting positively to Jimin’s dance.

Our dance god Park Jimin is nothing short of outstanding!💛 He always makes it a point to be at his best every time he’s on stage. His dance influences are so broad and diverse that he is able to showcase them with his own flavor and style. No one does it like him. He’s perfect!
