J.Y. Park announces 'Nizi Project' for JYPE's new Japanese girl group

J.Y. Park Nizi Project

J.Y. Park announced his plans for JYP's Japanese girl group.

On February 7, J.Y. Park held a press conference to announce the 'Nizi Project.' According to the founder of JYP Entertainment, the agency will be teaming up with Sony Music for 'Nizi Project,' a program showing the creation of their new Japanese girl group.

Applications will open in May 2019. The auditions will take place in July and August at 8 cities in Japan (Sapporo, Sendai, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Okinawa), and in 2 cities in the United States (Los Angeles and Honolulu).

A total of 20 candidates will be selected for 6-month training. Their audition and training process will be aired in a reality show format in October 2019. The number of final members is not yet confirmed, but they are set to be announced in April 2020 and the group is scheduled to debut around November 2020.

J.Y. Park explained the 'Nizi Project' aims to search for talents of various colors and make "a group like a rainbow" emitting a beautiful light.

In Japan Nizi is a very normal and common word. It means "rainbow".

They'll debut with only 6 months of training? I guess the standards for Jpop are different, PD48 showed us that.

It really depends. In Japan there's a difference between idols and artists. Idols are considered amateurs so the standards are way lower. For example Twice wouldn't be considered an idol group in Japan; they'd be considered artists. AKB48 and the other 48/46 groups are especially considered to be amateurs because Akimoto Yasushi, the guy who created and produces them, purposely rejects candidates that he finds to be too good already. Jurina from PD48 was one of the rare few members who were actually good from the beginning, most of them were more like Sakura who had zero training before auditioning for the group. That's because AKB48 is about watching girls go from being complete amateurs to more professional celebrities. That's why AKB48's most famous "eternal center", Acchan, was a girl who was chosen even though she was one of the weakest singers and dancers in the group. He wanted the center to be someone that the fans could see grow from a normal girl to a real idol over the years.

I think in JYP's case he's hoping to find girls like Momo, Sana and Mina who don't need that much training in order to debut (all 3 had a lot of good quality dance training before even becoming trainees and Mina debuted after only being a trainee for about a year). There was also Wonder Girls Yenny who debuted in a few weeks and was fine. I think, since his standards would obviously be different than AKB's, he'll be able to find some girls that he can train quickly enough.

Sounds like AKB48 has quite a strange concept. Personally I think someone should actually be good at singing & dancing before they're allowed to step on a stage but then again it seems to be working for them.

I wonder what he's gonna do with all of his Japanese trainees then because this seems like they're gonna be completely selected through the show and not from existing trainees...

Does he have anymore Japanese trainees left? I thought the only one he had was Mashiro and she left last year.

There are at least three that I know of... there is Mako, a Korean/Japanese mix & a third one who's name I can't remember... JYP always has a ton of Japanese trainees though you just don't see them because they're usually trained separately from the Koreans.

Cool. Thanks for the info! I don't really follow company trainees so the only ones I knew of were the ones that performed at the showcase or were part of the rumored group. I wonder what he's planning to do with them then, maybe debut them in Korea in the future?

I will audition but i am not sure about how skilled girls they want if they are looking for girls who train in dance and singing from childhood and go to academy to become idols than i have zero chances i really want to be idol and each passing day i am more into idols and i want to be part of that but anyway i will have many chances there are lot of groups in Japan they add new members every year for new generations but i don't want to get lost in sea of girls that is scary i want limitied number of members and I love JYP and Twice and for Sana i will do it eeeeekkkkkkkkkkk

The last k-pop group that I saw debut in Japan first instead of South Korea was PURETTY (Under DSP). They had big success in Japan but when it came to them promoting in South Korea, they were hardly near success. When their contracts ended only three of them stayed under the company with two of them debuting under KARD and APRIL and the last girl changing to train as an actress. I'm wondering if JYP is just going to keep them in Japan or bring them to South Korea as well and if he does bring them over, I hope they have success but at the same time this is one of the big three companies.
