When a label decides to make the legendary step of funding a girl group that isn't the typical girl group type, it'll be revolutionary.

Now this may be a hard leap of faith to make because i think labels feel like a non-cutesy-and-hella-feminine girl group won't be successful. I definitely don't MIND cutesy and girly concepts, and i don't mean they should make a tomboy group for the hell of it. I just mean i feel like with girl groups there isn't much to them than just being pretty. Most girl groups don't even have technically sophisticated dances and most main dancers and girls in girl groups can't dance (imo) beyond just wiggling. What would make me happy is seeing girl groups like 2ne1 and EXID singing about things can relate to and sending positive messages. Girl groups who may have a group concept of being cute or whatever, but have individual personalities and aren't all the same.

BTS makes songs about young adulthood and teen life besides just relationships and everyone is shook. I know i can be the only one who feels this way, so i doubt a group like this would be a failure.

Maybe there are groups out there already like this that i just don't know about, but hey. The fact that they aren't insanely popular says something. 2ne1 was, though. And f(x).

As I've said before, its probably scary to label CEOs throw a lot of money behind what they aren't sure will sell. Cute and pretty sells in korea, so that's that.

TL;DR: seeing some new girl groups taking inspiration from f(x), 2ne1 and BTS would be sick. So would girl groups with some wicked dance skills and positive, thought provoking lyrics

    The Ark says "HI, BITCH".

People let flop girls groups with different style, sound and concept. Don't ask for something that has been done and flopped so hard, that's why people stick with the formula.

For BTS people were familiar with what they were doing as B.A.P did similar things in the past and Big Bang, etc, etc, etc.

    Revolutionary? Nope.

Agencies of any kind and size tried any conceivable concept. Sometimes even inconceivable ones. You name it, somebody did it already.

It's not about the concept, the music, the members or their talent. Success is a combination of money, connections, marketing, hype and a crucial dose of luck. When everything aligns, you can make the audience gulp down any kind of trash, and they will thank you. A lot of successful groups don't deserve their fame, including some of those you cited.

Dreamcatcher fits your description very well. They have strong choreos, are far away from having a cute or girly concept and Siyeons and Yoohyeons vocals are out of this world. For the thought provoking thoughts you may have to listen to their B Songs though.

This post is not serious at all. And why the "cute-shame" (I'm sure this person also slut-shame girl groups) but hey, if BTS (just because they are in this post) shows Jimin dancing on the floor doing sexual movements, it's fine.
    S-T-O-P WOMAN SHAMING.
There are women WHO ARE CUTE, and love being that way. and there are women WHO ARE SEXY and love being like that. so please, stop being so basic and thinking "they should do more girl crush concepts". Lovelyz has AMAZING VOCALS and Gfriend has AMAZING dancers, but hey, just because they make cute concepts they are cancelled? its so stupid.
im done with this shaming to whatever girls do.

I totally agree with this post. Comments here seem to say that all girl group concepts have been tried out but I disagree! My dream is seing a girl group with an EXO or NCT concept one day. And every time there is a new girl group with an interesting concept, either the choreographies are annoying (overly sexualized with a lot of hip movement) or the songs are uninteresting (poor lyrics or lack of musical originality). Honestly as a woman I feel like I don't have anyone representing me in the Kpop industry, appart maybe from Amber Liu.

Apparently badass groups are not that popular in Asia, but I think things are changing. Look at these groups like BTS, Monsta X and Blackpink who started to be famous abroad and are now becoming popular in Korea. Also there is this interesting Chinese group FFC-Acrush, although I am not sure they are very popular it shows that there is a need for less stereotypically sexualized groups. Same for this Kpop boy group In2it who are a bit effeminate.

I hope we can see more interesting boy- and girl-group concepts in the future, and hopefully interesting music!

I think the problem is not that agencies don't try to make a group like that, the thing is ... for a group really being "badass" they have to BE not just PLAY THE PART which is what all those "badass" girl groups are in the end, just the image of girl crush played by bubbly girls. They have to be sincere and true to what they represent, not being just an staged concept as of today. You mentioned Amber that for me is one of the most authentic persons in the world, what you see is what you get, unfortunately we only have one.

You are absolutely right. There are so many really talented groups out there, but a lack of authenticity is what tends to bury them. I don't blame the idols themselves though. I think the problem is the neverending micromanaging from these entertainment CEOs. The need to control every single aspect of an idol and not letting them be themselves often times is the problem. You force a "badass" concept onto young women who sometimes barely look over the age of 14 and honestly expect people to buy into? Once this obsession with controlling idol personalities and hardly letting them contribute to their own music, lightens up a bit you'll start seeing more individuality within groups. Right now the industry is oversaturated with groups who are very similar to one another. It's time for a switch up.
