SHINee's Key reveals SM Entertainment prohibited him from talking in his early debut days

Key
SHINee's Key wasn't allowed to talk in his early debut days.

The November 14 episode of JTBC's 'Give Me a Meal' welcomed Key and Jang Woo Hyuk from the 1990s SM boy group H.O.T as the guests.

During the show, Key revealed, "In the beginning, SM told me not to talk because of my dialect/accent. But as you can see, I love talking." Jang Woo Hyuk, who's also from Gyeongsang province, said, "Same for me too, so I regret it sometimes. I think it would've been okay to speak with a dialect/accent."

Key added, "I was very embarrassed when I first came to Seoul." He explained that people had trouble understanding him due to his Gyeongsang dialect/accent.

It's so stupid that people normalize this sort of attitude of the companies. This little things is what demonstrate how fucked up the idol culture is. People talk differently, and so what? Big deal. The idol industry is somehow an effort to produce people who looks the same, talk the same, dresses the same, sing the same type of hit songs... I'm glad seeing idols who somehow subvert this mindset, even though they kept being shamed by the great public, like Sulli and Hyuna.

It's all about $$$. End of story. Right or wrong, the higher ups only want the money in the end. If it means shutting people up or otherwise.

[exhale] Whew!

It's because of his dialect and accent. LOL I thought they were worried Key's tongue would be uninhibited. 😆

I understand why it may seem fucked up, even I don't really like this kind of measures because they are too extreme (forbidding someone from talking) however I think many people don't really understand how difficult is to understand someone with a dialect, it's not like american english and british english, in asia dialects are really different from each other, you can more less understand what they are trying to say but you won't distinguish the words one by one, that's why we have an standard language that ee have to learn, specially if you are on TV 'cause everyone needs to undestand what you are saying regardless of their province, I hope this helped

Thank you for this clarification, I kind of get it because we go throught tha same language barriers where I live, though it's a country in South America. I believe it's important for international fans like me to get the point of view of people closer to the issue. But I guess anything can't justificate some, like you said, extreme measures, and we have to be careful to don't be the ones trying to justificate this kind of thing at the end of the day :(

That's so sad, so controlling, I mean I do get it, but to tell him not to talk is a too much. He could have fixed it and it would have been really cute. They completely embarrassed him and literally said, 'yeah you have a very ugly accent, and that's a no-no.' In a way it's kinda making fun of where he grew up. The public and even the management expect such high expectation on their idols to be this perfect Seoul person. Like, there's no such thing.

Click bait, its due to his dialect, and he said, "IN THE BEGINING", which means its not true now, i guess articles like to use titles like that to generate attention.

The world would've missed out if Key didn't talk as much as he does

Jaejoong wasn’t Allowed to talk much until around 2008 (5 years) because they wanted him to keep a stoic image. It’s intetersting because they let lay talk even though mc’s didn’t understand him often. Maybe that’s why winwin doesn’t talk? Then again Lucas....

this show you how fucked up companies are.. just because of his accent he should not talk ,really?? im disappointed because idols suffer a lot to be who they are and to achieve their dreams, stupid excuses like accent should not exist and its clear there is more shit going on and a lot of unfair treatment in the industry

they dont want him to talk may be because the general korean public dont like dialect or may be they will look down on him due to his accent.. he might get targeted by the netizens for the way he talks.. we all know how brutal koreans are towards the celebs.. some of the words he says might not be appropriate for the general koreans.. he was way too young back then and if he got any backlash for the way he speaks it would have been very hard on him..

not everything that happens is the company's fault..

if it become common people will not hate them but with them getting afraid and forced to not use their own accent of course others will find it weird and mock them if oneday they accidently talked with their own accent, i dont know if you understand my point, people get educated with time if all companies let their idols speak up ,use their own accent they will "rarely" get mocked because it will be common and people will get more openminded then.. people change when they get exposed to things that should be changed ...i guess they should leave the choice to their artists too if they want to speak that way or not, i dont like that companies have a lot of power about their idols i want idols to have some freedom too ,things like asking to change the way they speak or to not date or hide the fact that they are dating i do hope those things change with time then you will see how people will not be as pressed about their idols dating.. same about accent ,to be afraid and hide and feel ashamed to talk with your own accent will that solve the prob? no you should face the prob and you get hate first but then you will see the change.

i come from a place with too many dialects and its a common thing for celebs to change their dialect to the standard language because some of the words from the dialect will be offensive or inappropriate or will have a totally different meaning for the rest of the people which makes it hard for the majority of the population to understand.. its not that big of a deal.. also korea gives too much importance to formal speech and may be some of the way he speaks might be disrespectful and it will only affect him negatively..

i think minho and key were not that good with each other during trainee days because of the way he spoke.. i remember watching an iv where minho thought key was being disrespectful towards him but key said he found it disrespectful because of his slang..( i watched that iv a long time ago and i thing it was minho and key but the reason was the dialect)

if something like that happens on national televison knetz would have crucified him to no end and during debut i guess he was not even 18 yrs old.. those kind of bullying would have harmed him and the group's image..
