[Song & MV Review] J.Y. Park - 'Still Alive'

J.Y. PARK - "STILL ALIVE"

The man, the myth, the legend, and the whisperer...Yes, producer, CEO, and solo artistJ.Y. Park is back with a new single, "I'm Still Alive." And he is still alive and kicking, just in case you hadn't heard the news.

Park has been bitten by the singing bug yet again, as he makes his way through a semi-catchy tune punctuated by awkward moments. It's not bad, it's just not great, and if you can imagine what a 44-year-old sounds like trying to be cool, yes, that's exactly what it sounds like. And oh god, the rapping...

There are some horns that sound more like they belong in a Phil Collins song than in a K-pop tune, and that's being nice. I suppose I shouldn't take this song that seriously, because the lyrics are absolutely hilarious:

Never tried to be cute, nor innocent
And never said my lover is my fans.
I made my debut before they were born,
but still winning awards in front of them.

And he goes on to diss basically every idol, probably even his own stable.

Overall, it gets better every time I listen to it, but I'm not sure that's saying much. It's good for entertainment value, but I don't think it stands up musically to his earlier works.

MV REVIEW

Of course, the MV was my first hint he wasn't being serious. The video is a complete send-up of an older k-pop star trying to be relevant. It's a great big nod to a good time, and the grin he sports through much of it says it all. There's all sorts of classic scenes, where he dresses in one crazy outfit or another, and the looks of disgust on the girls' faces when he sits near them are just priceless.

I know criticisms have been leveled at him for not acting his age, his eccentricity, and even his promoting himself more than his idols, but I happen to enjoy JYP, and his appearances are good for a few laughs.

There's some great stuff here, and the MV makes up for the song. It's actually pretty funny, and I can't help but think he's mocking his haters as well. There's even a part where he is surrounded by frames of people doing those reaction videos, too. We see some over-the-top costumes in this MV, which makes it even funnier. Those plastic pants are the stuff of which nightmares are made.
