REPLY 1988 - EPISODE 15

Dong Ryong falls in with the wrong crowd, tumbles off a motorbike, and skins his knee. The gang clean him up and help him get home. His parents aren't even home to notice the injury. It all comes to a head when he ends up in the police station, picked up with his classmate for riding without helmets. He and his mother reconnect as she takes him home and cooks a meal for him.

Deok Seon's chances of getting into college are slim to none, given her poor grades. After a meeting with her teacher, Mom calls her Deok Seon again, instead of her "lucky" name. The poor girl is despondent, because she feels Mom has given up on her, and cries about her future.

Jung Hwan's father exercises on the stairs, much to wifey's consternation. Moments after she rides him for it, he hurts himself. They rush him to the hospital, and find out that he's broken his back. They have trouble getting any of the doctors to pay attention to him, until Taek, from the training center, places a call to the hospital director, and uses his baduk celebrity status to light a fire under their butts. Jung Hwan thanks Taek, who doesn't make a big deal out of it.

Lovelines: Mi Ok and Jung Bong have another date, and they do the "coffee kiss" scene from Secret Garden, down to the wardrobe, even. Taek, who has a thing for Deok Seon, now realizes that Jung Hwan also wants her. Bora tells Sun Woo that she's studying for the bar exam, which worries both of them about their future as a couple...

Mi Ok is too cute for words. I think it's nice that the writers gave a couple of the recurring characters their own romance. We need more of that, because it makes things feel more real, and helps with the suspension of disbelief. Most of the major characters are caught up in romances of their own, so why not the others? I was taken by surprise, but that's a good thing. It gives Jung Bong more of a personality, other than just the dim, older brother of Jung Hwan.

Just as Sun Woo accepts the changeup with Taek's dad and his mom, now he has to worry about his own relationship. I think he's a good influence on Bora, and rather than being a stubborn college student, she's actually looking forward to spending time with the guy, even if he still has to use jondaetmal (speaking in honorifics)when talking to her. And I like their relationship, all things considered, and I hope they don't have to break up over something so minor. Besides, the airwaves are jammed with lawyer shows and there's no shortage of romance in those dramas.

The bromance is particularly powerful in this episode, and I like how this installment highlighted how Taek is a great guy who comes through for his friends when the chips are down. While the whole gang seem to display this at one time or another (maybe a consequence of being lifelong friends), I thought it was a great scene with Taek and Jung Hwan at the center. I just wonder how things are going to shake out now that Taek knows the two bros like the same girl.

And we have yet another hospital scene. It seems an unwritten rule of K-Dramas that you must have a hospital scene every week. It's like the hospital administrators have their hands in the script or something. I'd like to see a drama where people stay out of the hospital -- that would actually be a novel concept nowadays. I have to admit that this twist was rather touching, though.

Because I'm an optimist and believe firmly that you weren't on Santa's naughty list this year, here's another song from the OST:
