There was some criticism placed on two of the three biggest broadcasting companies in Korea, KBS and SBS as some mistakes were made for captions during the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
During the female volleyball match between Korea and Japan, the caption on the scoreboard graphic for Korea read: "Dae-han-il-bon ????," which can be translated to "Korea Japan." It was only after 4 minutes since the caption appeared that it was fixed to "Dae-han-min-guk ????," which is translated to "The Republic of Korea."
SBS released an official press release regarding the mistake and said, "There was a caption mistake on the scoreboard graphic for the Incheon Asian Games female volleyball match Korea against Japan. It was confirmed that our computer graphics freelancer had made a mistake."
They added, "We want to apologize to our viewers. SBS will work harder to air a more completed broadcasting throughout the Incheon Asian Games."
In addition to the silly mistake during the female volleyball match, people also noticed SBS's caption for Korean soccer player Park Jooho which showed, "HKG PARK Jooho," with a Hong Kong flag. HKG is the official abbreviation for Hong Kong.
However, the lack of attentiveness wasn't limited to only SBS, KBS also mistakenly placed a Japanese flag next to the name of Korean swimmer, Jang Kyu Chul, during the male butterfly stroke 100m heat.
Netizens who saw the mistakes wrote, "Is this mistake possibly made by an Ilbe worm?", "Is it really just the freelancer's mistake? Either way, this is work that needs to be done internally by SBS [staff], why are they making flimsy excuses?", "If it was a simple mistake like 'Korea-America' (Dae-han-mi-guk) it could be a typo, but I'm not convinced with 'Korea-Japan' (Dae-han-il-bon) kekeke."
