[Drama Review] 'Cheese In The Trap' - Episode 16 (Final Episode)

Park Hae Jin, Seo Kang Jun, Lee Sung Kyung, Kim Go Eun
As expected, all that the last episode of 'Cheese in the Trap' left were disappointment and dissatisfaction. No matter how much I've prepared myself for the worst, the ending scene, from the part with Seol's computer screen to the flashback of Seol racing towards Yoo Jung, is possibly one of the worst endings of this year.

I've watched a good amount of Korean dramas until now and what I've come to realize is that Korean drama producers and writers, including the ones for 'Cheese in the Trap,' aren't so great at wrapping up their stories. There are more than just a few dramas that start off amazing, with huge potential, until the producers drop the ball by letting the storyline run off on a whole new course (i.e. 'Remember,' 'Big,' and 'Who Are You'). Unfortunately, 'Cheese in the Trap' wasn't an exception.

Just as I've expected, the last episode of 'Cheese in the Trap' was so much of the producers trying to clean up their messy storyline that the viewers were forced to fill in the blank with their own interpretations.

The whole first half of the episode shows that Yoo Jung (finally) gets it through his thick, stubborn, head that he's been ignoring the feelings of others, reiterating a personality flaw we've known of Yoo Jung since episode 2. Though it was a relief that Yoo Jung himself finally sees the consequence of his actions, it was nothing but repetition for the viewers.

If there was anything that I wanted out of this drama was to see In Ho happy, with or without Seol. In Ho does end up "happy" without Seol as it was revealed that his hand has healed, he is finally debt-free, he gets accepted into music school, and he plays the piano at a fancy restaurant. Yay, In Ho. A personal victory for In Ho, who is only the sub-main character in the drama.

But was it only me who thought that this 5-minute long conversation between Yoo Jung and In Ho was definitely not enough for Yoo Jung to pay for In Ho's debt? The drama focused so much on In Ho's individual growth and other shenanigans that they ignored the second most interesting plot which was the misunderstanding between In Ho and Yoo Jung.

Now that the drama has ended, we're sitting here twiddling our thumbs, trying to convince ourselves that Yoo Jung has had a change of heart from that brief heart-to-heart moment with In Ho and felt as though he needed to help out an old friend. That's probably what happened, yeah.

Let's not forget the part where In Ho's hand is perfectly fine and even performs magnificently at the concours and then again at the place he helps out at. Didn't the doctor say that he needs a surgery for his hand to fully heal? Didn't the doctor also say that he shouldn't do anything strenuous with his hands for couple months? What is this wizardry?

Usually, I don't mind having to fill in missing plots with my own interpretations, but isn't this a bit too much? It's one thing we don't know about how In Ho's hand healed, but what about all the other things like what the hell was Yoo Jung doing for three years when he went away? Where did he even go?

'Cheese in the Trap' started off with huge hype, especially since the original webtoon is known to already be one of the best long-term webtoons around, and the people trusted Park Hae Jin to really bring Yoo Jung to life with his faultless acting and amiable image.

Come last episode, 'Cheese in the Trap' has dropped from the most anticipated to one of the messiest webtoon-turned-dramas. There is a good reason as to why the controversy is still ongoing and people are actually making a fuss about the turnout of it all. The drama had potential, the producers just couldn't handle the hype.
