'REPLY 1988' - EPISODE 18

Look! It's Trash-Oppa!

Our 23-year-old crew head to Taek's birthday party, which is well into 1994. Sun Woo parks the car for him (Taek can drive, but not park -- he's still our helpless boy), and they hit the party, teasing Taek about the story in the papers (a celebrity fingers him as her ideal type). Back at home, Deok Seon's dad grouses about his 2nd daughter never being home, and fusses over Bora. Of course, when the now-grown kids sleep, the parents watch them lovingly.

Later, they hang out at the restaurant where Dong Ryong works, drinking and reminiscing; Dong Ryong and Deok Seon need to be guided home as they are three sheets to the wind. Bora has a blind date, a colleague of Sun Woo's nicknamed "Trash" (nice cameo by 1994 alum Jung Woo). Jung Bong gets ecstatic over meeting a friend in a chatroom. Sunday comes and now it's time for everyone's dates. Bora ends up with Sun Woo, which is exactly what she hoped, since he went in Trash-oppa's place. Taek forfeits a match and joins Deok Seon at a concert, freezing out Jung Hwan who arrives too late. Jung Bong finds out the girl he was chatting with is Mi Ok, and they rekindle things.

Adult Mi Ok

Dong Ryong tells Jung Hwan he wants to see a confession, since Dong Ryong will never be able to. Jung Hwan pulls off this beautiful confession to Deok Seon, detailing all the little things he's done for her that showed he cared, telling her he loves her and can't live without her, and then laughs with Dong Ryong, joking that he and Dong Ryong will make a cute couple. Jung Hwan looks like he's almost crying, though...

So everything's right with the world, except that blasted husband thing. They're going to keep us guessing, just like usual, throwing red herrings in our way so we can't predict exactly who it is with any certainty. The clues they drop in the present are sparse (he likes comics, he doesn't like interviews).

Something that bothered me was Jung Hwan's fake confession andI felt cheated.I was on pins and needles... but then he pauses, letting it sink in, and abruptly does an about-face and turns it all into a big joke. I think it was supposed to be funny, but I wasn't laughing.

At Taek's birthday party

I like how the parents act. It's exactly natural to bemoan the fact that you never see your kids. It's called empty nest syndrome, and nearly every parent experiences it at one time or another. Think how it is when you can't see your best friend. Now magnify that by 100 and you have an idea of how your parents feel. They've lived most of their adult lives all for their kids, and now they have a bunch of free time and nothing to fill it with. Anyways, I'm glad these families get along so well. I've seen enough dramas where the father and/or mom are evil.

It seems like not all the kids are happy, though. Dong Ryong seems very lonely, and so does Deok Seon, who tells white lies about boyfriends and being popular, when in reality she's lonely too. Jung Hwan has no one either, which makes a certain amount of sense, given his military service. But I know how it is when you don't have someone, and he does, too -- his fake confession was more real than not, but he was too embarrassed to commit to it. I'm hoping that's not the bromance thing, again, it has to be a tough thing to step aside for a friend, much less for six years!

What really happens when you're sleeping

Thankfully, they brought the length of this episode down to 1 hour 40 minutes. It is still too long, but at least it's a more manageable time frame. It's fun to watch, but not when you try to fit too much into a small frame. Why do you think the last Harry Potter book was stretched across two films, and still they couldn't do it justice? I like this show, because despite its comedic tropes it's very realistic. It has its basis firmly grounded in reality, yet it's not afraid to laugh at itself sometimes. And the nostalgia takes me back to the time of cassette walkmans and browsing newsgroups / BBS on 2400 baud modems. When I heard those dial-up sounds in Jung Bong's room. Man...

We've got one more week left, peeps. Enjoy it while you can.
