[Song & MV Review] GI (Global Icon) - 'DoliGo DoliGo'

GLOBAL ICON (GI) - "DoliGo DoliGo"

Tracklist:
1. DoliGo DoliGo
2. DoliGo DoliGo (inst.)

Originally founded under Sim Tong Entertainment with a tomboyish concept, GI jettisoned that same concept after losing three of their members: OneKet, Aram, and HaYun. Back with a new lineup consisting of EunJi, AI, Jiamin, Heeso, and Dokyung, they've released a new single and MV, "DoliGo DoliGo."

The song itself is actually really catchy. They've got kind of an EXID vibe going on in the song, a bit reminiscent of "Up & Down." But it's hardly a slavish influence and really injects the tune with more life than I've seen in their previous singles. Chanted lyrics and repetition with"turn it turn it turn it turn" provide a really effective hook, and they do this more than once with different verses to shake things up. It all builds towards an exciting belted chorus, without losing its original tune or its momentum. Despite the concept change, they're still tough and hardly willing to put up with a loser, and the lyrics and the tune impart this well.

I was a little worried when I heard about the changeup. We got used to one concept which I enjoyed. Then they decide to do something entirely different and go for a sexier image. The company's said they were willing to explore the tomboy concept at a later date, but I'm not holding my breath. They've still crafted a pretty good song here, so now I'm just looking forward for an EP.

MV REVIEW

Find out what all the fuss was about and watch "DoliGo DoliGo."

Finally, we get the full view of what the risque teasers were trying to hide. The girls dance and party around the inside and outside of a beauty salon, as well as a studio and a couple of cheaper sets. The girls appear to be having a blast here, despite the cramped sets.

The dancing is not all that. It appears to be just party dancing, with no amazing moves thrown in. It's probably just as well. Some of those stages look so small that you'd probably hurt yourself if you threw your arm out wildly.

They appear to use real "off the rack" clothes for this, which works in its favor. Videos where the girls are in revealing catsuits and booty shorts tend to wear thin very quickly. This at least makes a nod toward decency.

Until the butt shots begin. I'm guessing this concept was supposed to be a sexy one, and the imagery is a bit risible. We get to see what that tongue was licking and who it belongs to. We also get treated to tasteless shots like this:

No, that's not my cursor.

Neither is that.

I'm sure somebody, somewhere thought that was a good idea, and he needs to be whipped with a water noodle. It's actually not all that sexy, it's just weird. Did they think fans might not know where those body parts were located? There are a few more elements that are pretty obvious as to what they represent, but they're more disjointed than anything. I think they could have done a better job without all that.

The song gets a thumbs up. The video: No. Just...no.
