AfreecaTV is a broadcasting website where BJs, like mukbang BJs, earn money when viewers make money donations in the form of "star balloons." With a click of a button, when a viewer gives a BJ a star balloon, they're actually giving around 100 won (approx. 10 US cents). While the amount sounds small, when you have a huge audience like Yoo So Hee, the numbers add up quickly.
On October 15, during Yoo So Hee's broadcast, viewers reportedly wrote in her chatbox, "It's going to start at 12:16 PM," seeming to have planned something for their favorite BJ. When Yoo So Hee asked what was starting, the viewers apparently replied, "When we make an AfreecaTV balloon record."
True to their word, starting at the 12:16 mark, thousands of viewers began donating to Yoo So Hee star balloons simultaneously. In the end, they were able to gift her a total amount of 355,000 star balloons, breaking a record and donating approximately 39 million won to the BJ.
At this, Yoo So Hee sang for her male-dominant audience and said, "Today I'm very happy; husbands, I love you."
Usually, Yoo So Hee makes around 20 million won (approx. $19,000) a day. The reason behind her popularity remains a mystery to some, and netizen reaction to her recent success has been negative, saying comments like, "Are [the viewers] crazy? Keke," "Seems like [the viewers are] senseless men. If you have that kind of money then help out the pitiful children and elderly," and, "It seems like this is a world where if you're pretty, you make money easily."
