GABDONGI EPISODE 14

Maria shares her recollection of Gab Dong's face. Ji Wool is called in to help flesh it out. The face model begins to look like Section Chief Cha, especially when aged, but they still don't recognize it as him. The police continue their investigation of the 8th victim. Maria flashes back and Section Chief Cha says something that mirrors what Gab Dong said years ago. Mu Yeom goes to Profiler Han and Chul Geon to share his suspicions. Crybaby's mother asks Mu Yeom to share the letter with its intended recipient. When Mu Yeom hands it to Section Chief Cha, his stunned reaction tells our hero all he needs to know. Mu Yeom sobs at the shattering of his expectations about his mentor. Later, Mu Yeom finds the letter twisted into a familiar knot. He confronts Tae Oh and asks how they get to lock up Gab Dong once and for all, proposing a game of chicken -- using cars. Tae Oh is in one vehicle and Mu Yeom the other. Maria waves the scarf and they rev their cars into action...

Last episode Tae Oh's family offered Ji Wool an insane amount of money to marry their son. I didn't mention it because it didn't seem significant. I was wrong! Not too far into this episode, Ji Wool dreams of wedding Tae Oh. That scene just floored me! She doesn't seem happy in the dream, but she's still mulling the proposal over. To her credit, she finally rejects it, but I have to ask: why did she have to think about it? I accept that there are women who think they can change the ones they love, but if you have to change them, why be with them? The women in this show seem to act quite...off. One minute they're strong, the next they're weak, and they seem drawn to psychos, the unattainable. I wish the writers would put as much care into developing the women as they have into Tae Oh.

Marrying a psychopath

A game of chicken. How in the world did they come up with that? I'm...wow! So, let me get this straight: in order for an inmate to cooperate with you, you have to show him you're a total badass and engage in a completely reckless activity. Okaaayy. You could just simply offer him amnesty or a reduced sentence like a normal cop. But no, not Mu Yeom. I would think it would be rather dangerous --Tae Oh practically has a death wish and I'm not sure Mu Yeom's quite playing with a full deck either.

Tae Oh seems a bit bland this episode and the last. Maybe that's the reason for the game of chicken? To give him his edge back? I liked the scary dude, not the rolled-into-a-ball-and-crying dude, the guy with the strange empty look, or the raging psycho we saw before. The Tae Oh we see now is insanely subdued. And maybe that's just another facet of his personality that we will have to accept even as we accept that he committed all those murders.

A look at the police sketch software.

It seems they're set on having us believe Section Chief Cha is Gab Dong. He gets increasingly tense the more they investigate. They seem to be drawing it out, so I'm not sure how quickly they intend to figure it out. Mu Yeom appears to know who it is, but he has no proof. Usually the big reveal is bad this far from the end, but I have to trust the writers know what they're doing.

I will admit: this isn't usually my kind of show. The genre it's in would probably have me read the synopsis, and then go on with my day. A large number of "police procedurals" and "Law & Order" clones go unwatched by me. But 'Gabdongi'seems to have enough twists and turns to keep me watching. Every time I think I have it figured out, I don't. And that is a very good thing.
