Supernova caught in controversy due to remarks on Japanese variety show

The members of Supernova were recently swept up in a controversy for a few statements they made while guesting on Japan's TBS variety program, "Kuraberu Kurabera." The members were asked their thoughts on the cultural differences they found while promoting in both Korea and Japan, as well as the differences in the way Korean idols are trained. During the segment, Supernova mentioned, "Korean idols confidently confess that they've underwent plastic surgery. It's become a lot more popular lately, and has even become a form of PR. When idols confess about their plastic surgery to their fans, they earn a lot more popularity." Member Gun-il was asked his thoughts on plastic surgery, to which he replied, "It's not something to boast about, but I don't think it's anything to be embarrassed about either." The panelists of "Kuraberu Kurabera" went on to claim that, "Korean parents present plastic surgery as a gift to children who enter college or become of age." Supernova added, "In Korea, there are gift certificates for plastic surgery."

Once footage of the broadcast spread out through internet community sites, netizens commented, "I'm unable to understand as to why they felt such statements were appropriate or necessary," "The Hallyu image is already at risk because of the KARA dispute, they were not in the position to make such statements," and "That was too negative of an expression to make regarding Korean idols." Representatives of their agency cleared up what actually happened through Newsen on February 7th and revealed that Supernova's statements were actually made during a segment praising Korean celebrities. Their representatives stated, "For two hours, the program discussed the positive aspects of their careers. They only talked about plastic surgery for about a minute, but that stimulating content was edited and spread. They had no malicious intent. The members just wanted to state that celebrities confess about going under the knife more honestly than before." Other netizens reprimanded those that had left hateful replies by commenting, "It's not right to make judgments based off of unclear content. It can turn into witch hunting, so please restrict yourselves" and "Supernova made an appearance on the show to positively discuss about Korean idols. The reports were exaggerated, and I'm sure they're upset with what is happening."
